Senior linebacker
Joe Copp of the Alfred University football team was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week on Tuesday, Sept. 26. It is Copp's third career D3football.com Team of the Week accolade in his collegiate career.
Copp becomes the third E8 student-athlete to earn D3football.com weekly accolades in 2023, joining the SUNY Cortland duo of
Mike Baloga (Sept. 12) and
JJ Laap (Sept. 19).
Copp, a native of Minoa, NY, earned Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week accolades for the second straight time on Monday. He finished with a season-high 19 tackles, including 10 solo stops in a 9-6 non-conference win over Catholic University on Saturday. Copp was additionally credited with 2.5 tackles for a loss, totaling nine yards while eight of those yards came from his two solo sacks. In the third quarter, a fumble recovery from Copp resulted in a go-ahead touchdown drive. In the following quarter, Copp made a critical solo tackle on fourth down to give the ball back to Alfred. He also added one pass breakup.
This season, Copp leads the Empire 8 and is tied for second nationally with 54 tackles. His 31 solo tackles are also second in Division III. He also has 6.5 tackles for a loss and two sacks.
Copp now has 289 career tackles and is nine tackles shy of Alfred's all-time career tackles record.
Alfred is on bye this week. League play begins for the Empire 8 on Saturday, Sept. 30, as SUNY Morrisville hosts nationally-ranked SUNY Cortland, nationally-ranked Utica hosts Hartwick and St. John Fisher hosts SUNY Brockport in the 18th Annual Courage Bowl to benefit Camp Good Days and Special Times.
