MORRISVILLE, NY – Senior quarterback Steven Frerichs (Wilson, NY) of the SUNY Morrisville football team was named a semifinalist for the 2023 William V. Campbell Trophy by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF), once of a record setting 201 semifinalist selections announced Wednesday, Sept. 27.
Celebrating its 34th year, the Campbell Trophy recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation for combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership.
Frerichs is one of 48 total semifinalists from Division III, representing the Empire 8 as the lone selection.
"Steve is a great example for what the William V. Campbell Trophy is about," head coach Ed Raby, Jr. said.
"He is a champion in the classroom, off and on the field. More importantly he makes a positive impact on many people he comes in contact with."
"We are extremely proud to see him selected as a semifinalist for this award."
Frerichs is a seven-time honoree for the Empire 8 as a President's List selection, achieving a 3.75 or better semester GPA each term, is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and Chi Alpha Sigma National Honor Societies.

Candidates eligible for consideration must be nominated by their institution, a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least a 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.
The class is selected each year by the NFF Awards Committee, which is comprised of a nationally recognized group of media, College Football Hall of Famers and athletics administrators.
