PITTSFORD, NY – The St. John Fisher University women's basketball team were at home on Friday to take on undefeated Houghton University. The Cardinals outscored the Highlanders 15-4 in the third quarter and that was enough to take home the win, 65-49. Fisher now holds a record of 13-2 and are 6-0 in Empire 8 play. Houghton had its season-opening 14-game winning streak snapped and fell to 14-1 overall and 5-1 in E8 play.
The Highlanders jumped out to a 13-5 lead in the first quarter, but a 9-0 run put the Cardinals back in front with two minutes to play. Fisher continued to face a deficit in the second frame, but after a pair of free throws by Katie Moravec evened the score at 27-27, the Cardinals began to hit their stride. Going into the break, the team led 36-30 over Houghton.
Coming out of halftime, Fisher made the necessary adjustments and pulled away. Back-to-back three-pointers by Claire Kruszka brought the lead to double-digits and a pair of free-throws by Sidney Tomasso at the end of the frame had the Cardinals up 51-34 heading into the fourth. The two teams traded points the entire four quarter and Fisher took the win, 65-49.
Joleen Lusk led the way with a 20 point, 12 rebound double-double. Kruszka added 16 points of her own to go along with six rebounds and four assists.
The Cardinals are back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 16 as they travel to Utica University for a road Empire 8 matchup. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
