Below are the Empire 8 Players of the Week, released on January 8, 2024, for games played from January 2 – January 7, 2024. It is the 18th Empire 8 weekly honors release of the 2023-24 season. Sports featured include men’s and women’s basketball.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Christian Sage, Keuka, Sr., G, Owego, NY/Owego Free Academy
Sage had a big weekend for Keuka College as the Wolves won a pair of conference victories. On Friday, Sage led the Wolves with 19 points and added four assists in a victory over Hartwick. Then on Saturday, he again led the Wolves with 25 points. Sage was 9-for-12 from the field and 6-of-8 from 3-point in the win. The six 3-point field goals set a new career-high for the senior. On the season, Sage ranks fourth in the league in points per game and is averaging over 20 points per game in conference play.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – James Wang, Houghton, Fr., C, Vancouver, British Columbia/Montverde
Wang made the most of his 22 minutes in Saturday’s 93-76 win over Hartwick, matching his career high with 14 points (on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor) while contributing a season best four blocked shots and two. The 6-foot-8 center leads the Empire 8 conference in blocked shots and is shooting 47 percent from 3-point range for the season.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Kayla Camacho, Houghton, Jr., G, Spartanburg, SC/Spartanburg Christian
Camacho exploded for a career high 38 points, third most all-time in Empire 8 history on a sizzling 16-for-20 effort from the floor, including 4-5 from beyond the arc in Saturday’s 77-57 win over Hartwick, which moved the Highlanders to 13-0 on the season. Her 16 made field goals tied an Empire 8 single game mark, set by Utica’s Sydney Przygoda in 2021. Camacho, Houghton’s leading scorer also contributed seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals in the win. It is Camacho’s second E8 weekly honor of the 2023-24 season.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Vanessa Hall, Utica, Fr., F, Whitesville, NY/Whitesville Central
Hall averaged 20.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals in a pair of contests against SUNY Cortland and Russell Sage College. She began the week by scoring 14 points to go along with five boards on Tuesday against Cortland. On Friday, Hall tied a career-high 27 points while adding four rebounds, three steals, one block, and one assist in a 55-39 win over Russell Sage. She shot 12-for-20 from the field while knocking down three triples. It is Hall’s second E8 weekly honor of the season.
