Alfred Standout Alex Coffey Named to D3football.com Team of the Week

Alfred University tight end Alex Coffey was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week on Tuesday, Oct. 1. He is the seventh different Empire 8 player/position group to earn D3football.com Team of the Week honors this season and second from Alfred University.

Coffey, a junior from Columbia, MD, was also named the Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 30. He was an all-around standout for the Saxons in their 45-15 win over visiting Catholic University on Saturday, scoring three total touchdowns. Coffey was the go-to option on short yardage plays, subbing in as a wildcat quarterback, rushing five times for 18 yards as he totaled two rushing touchdowns. He was also targeted once for a 37-yard touchdown catch, Alfred’s longest passing play of the day. Coffey added one assisted tackle on a kickoff.

Coffey has accounted for five total touchdowns in just two games this season, on nine total touches, spanning eight carries for 68 yards and one reception for 37 yards.

League play begins for all eight Empire 8 teams on Saturday, Oct. 5. Hartwick College hosts Utica University at noon, while No. 2 SUNY Cortland hosts SUNY Morrisville and Alfred hosts Hilbert College at 1 p.m. In addition, SUNY Brockport hosts St. John Fisher University in the 19th annual Courage Bowl at 1 p.m. All proceeds from that game benefits Camp Good Days and Special Times.
