No. 3 Nazareth University (8-4) defeated No. 6 seed SUNY Brockport (3-8) by a score of 5-0 in the opening round of the 2024 Empire 8 Women’s Tennis Tournament Championship from the Mendon Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon.
The Golden Flyers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles competition. Catherine Zak and Kenna Ellis earned an 8-0 win for the Golden Flyers at the first position over Cara Vasile and Lena Paolicelli, while Nazareth's second doubles grouping of Ali Klee and Sarah Stone defeated Olivia Chiu and Sophie Langdon, 8-2. At third doubles, Anna Spencer and Victoria Cioni picked up an 8-1 win.
Ellis and Cioni made quick work of its singles opponents to clinch the win for the Golden Flyers. Ellis earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Vasile at second singles, while Cioni defeated Langdon, 6-3, 6-0 at fourth singles.
The Golden Flyers advance to take on No. 2 SUNY Geneseo on Friday in the second E8 semifinal contest at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Sharp Courts. Geneseo and Nazareth recently met on Sept. 17 with the Knights earning an 8-1 win.

Format: Dual match is played until decision (5 points) Three doubles matches are followed by six singles matches. No-ad scoring for both singles and doubles matches. Singles matches will play two out of three sets. Doubles play eight pro set with a twelve-point tiebreaker at 7-all.
