SUNY Geneseo Secures Top Seed For 2024 Empire 8 Tournament With 5-2 Win Over Brockport

Knights claim at least a share of the E8 Regular Season title and will host an E8 Semifinal game on Nov. 7

BROCKPORT, NY - The No. 18 SUNY Geneseo field hockey team took down Brockport 5-2, and secured at least a share of the Empire 8 Regular Season title the top seed in the Empire 8 Conference tournament, beginning Monday, Nov. 4. The team now sits at 15-1 overall and undefeated in conference play with an 11-game win streak.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Brockport struck first six minutes into the game, but Katrina Clare answered back right away. Clare took the ball down the field and scored her 16th goal of the season, unassisted.
  • Hailey Roethel scored Geneseo's second goal a few minutes later, off a pass from Sam Lewis and the Knights took a 2-1 lead into the second quarter.
  • Brockport tied it in the second quarter off a penalty stroke and the teams went into halftime tied 2-2.
  • Ada Roe gave Geneseo the lead in the 3rd quarter at 35:13. Geneseo put five more shots on net but could not get past the goalie and extend their lead before the final 15 minutes.
  • The Knights took control of the 4th quarter, with Ella Grieco scoring the team's fourth goal while Sam Lewis was credited with the assist.
  • Roethel sealed the deal with an unassisted goal, leading Geneseo to the 5-2 win over the Golden Eagles.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Katrina Clare scored her 47th goal of her career and is ranked #2 in career goals for Geneseo.
  • Lilly Spitz won her 14th game of the season in goal.
  • The Knights out-shot Brockport 28-5 and have won the last 12 match-ups against the Golden Eagles.

The Knights head to Houghton University on Tuesday, Oct. 29 for their final Empire 8 contest at 7 p.m.
