BROCKPORT, NY – On Friday night, the SUNY Brockport women's volleyball team defeated St. John Fisher, 3-1, in conference play for Brockport's home opener. The Golden Eagles begin Empire 8 play 1-0, moving to 8-5 overall on the season. Brockport, who made its E8 women's volleyball opener, snapped St. John Fisher's 38-game winning streak in Empire 8 regular season play, dating back to Oct. 20, 2018.
Brockport has now won four matches in a row ahead of Saturday's matchup with Nazareth. Starting 2024 1-0 at home, the squad is 8-0 at The Vlog since the start of the 2023 season.
The match began with a convincing showing from the visiting Cardinals in the first set. They took the first point of the match, 25-13. Trailing 1-0, the Green and Gold responded on the home court.
Brockport bounced back in the second with a 25-21 in to tie the match up at 1-1. The squad then repeated that scoring tally in the third set, 25-21, to take a 2-1 lead. The Golden Eagles finished up the match in the fourth set, 25-18, to secure the 3-1 victory at home.
Offensively, it was a two-headed monster for Brockport on the attack. Alexis Sison (38 TA) and Alenna Williamson (35 TA) were the go-to attackers on the night. Sison had a team-high 12 kills, while Williamson had 11.
Another Brockport duo handled the rotations in at the setter spot. Lauryn Forand totaled 22 assists, while Kaitlyn Jewett contributed 15.
Libero Elsie Logan continues to lead the team in digs on the defensive side of the action. Logan totaled 21 digs on the night, leading all players for the match. Alexis Sison got down for 15 digs and Gianna Felipe flew around the court for 10 digs.
Defending the net for the Green and Gold were middle blockers Lauren Emke and Alenna Williamson. Emke got up for four solo blocks, notching a new career-high for a single match. Williamson got credit for two solo blocks of her own.
On the serve, the Golden Eagles had five aces against the Cardinals. Logan and Jewett both had two, while Forand chipped in with one service ace.
Taking a look at the team stat comparisons, Brockport held a slight edge nearly across the board. The home team finished with more points (51-45), kills (40-34), aces (5-4), assists (44-35), and digs (65-61).
St. John Fisher held the advantage in blocks (7-6) and had four less attack errors than Brockport. The Cardinals move to 7-7 overall and 0-1 to start E8 play.
The Golden Eagles are back in action on Saturday, continuing Empire 8 play on the road. They are set to take on the Nazareth Golden Flyers, starting at 2 p.m.
