Knights win their first E8 Championship in first season as league member and finish the season 18-3

BRYN MAWR, PA - The No. 17 SUNY Geneseo field hockey team came up short in the opening round of the NCAA tournament on Wednesday afternoon, falling at No. 15 Bryn Mawr by a score of 1-0. The defeat ends an incredible 2024 season for the Knights, where they finished with a record of 18-3 and won the program's first conference title since the 2019 season. The Knights won the 2024 E8 Championship in their first season as a league member.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Knights got the first chances to score in the game, with Katrina Clare taking the first two shots and the Knights earning the first penalty corner in the opening quarter. Despite controlling the opening 15 minutes and not allowing Bryn Mawr to register a shot, Geneseo was unable to take the lead and entered the second quarter tied at 0-0.
  • Clare went on to register the first shot on target in the game early in the second quarter, but Bryn Mawr was able to make the save. The owls were able to put pressure on the Geneseo defense throughout the second quarter with a total of six shots and three penalty corners, but the Knights kept them off the scoreboard and went into halftime with the score still tied.
  • Geneseo's defense continued to hold strong against the Owls in the third quarter, but Bryn Mawr found a way to break through in the closing seconds of the quarter off a penalty corner.
  • The Knights pressed for a goal in the final 15 minutes to force overtime, but couldn't find a way to score the equalizer and fell 1-0.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Lilly Spitz played 54 minutes in goal for Geneseo and tallied two saves, while Hanna Pochobradsky registered two defensive saves and Hailey Roethel, one.
  • Geneseo's record of 18-3 marks their best win percentage in a season since 2010, where the Knights finished the year at 18-2.
