SUNY Geneseo Wins 2024 Empire 8 Women's Soccer Championship, 1-0 Over Nazareth

GENESEO, NY - The Geneseo women's soccer team (13-4-3) won the 2024 Empire 8 Championship in its first year as an Empire 8 member, 1-0 over Nazareth University from College Stadium on Saturday afternoon (11-6-3). The Golden Flyers were attempting to win their fourth straight E8 title.

The Knights earn the Empire 8's automatic berth into the 2024 Empire 8 Women's Soccer Championship. The Knights will await their NCAA Tournament opponent and site during the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer selection show will be held Monday, November 11 at 2 p.m. 

Riley Griffin scored the only goal of the game, the third of her career, early in the second half to lead the Knights to victory.  Geneseo's Juliette Frischmann was named the Empire 8 Women's Soccer Championship Tournament Most Valuable Player.

The Knights started the game strong and were awarded a PK six minutes into the half. Julliette Frischmann took the shot but was denied by the crossbar and the game remained scoreless.  

Geneseo put five more shots on Nazareth but ultimately went into halftime tied 0-0. 

In the second, Geneseo went on the offensive to start and secured a corner kick five minutes in. Abby Foster put a beautiful ball inside the 10. Lindsey Clar played it down with her head and Riley Griffin struck home, giving the Knights the 1-0 lead.  

Frischmann went on a breakaway and hurdled the goalkeeper but her shot went just wide of the left post. Geneseo was steadfast on defense through the rest of the second and the Knights went on to win 1-0. 

Goalkeeper Emily McLouth had four saves and recoreded her third shutout of the season.  

Geneseo outshot the Golden Flyers 11-8 with six on net. Annika Monfort made five saves in defeat for the Golden Flyers.
