Below are the Empire 8 Players of the Week, released on December 2, 2024, for games played from November 25-December 1. It is the 14th Empire 8 weekly honors release of the 2024-25 season. Sports featured include men’s and women’s basketball and men’s ice hockey.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Marcus Reed, Keuka, Jr., F, Queens, NY/Our Savior Lutheran
Reed exploded for a season-high 26 points to go along with three rebounds, one steal and one block at SUNY Cobleskill on Tuesday evening. He scored 20 of his 26 points in the opening half and was 4-for-4 behind the arc, as Keuka raced out to a 52-44 lead at intermission.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Chris Woodard, Elmira, Fr., G, Elmira, NY/Elmira
Woodard averaged 14.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 73.3 percent from the floor (11-for-15) in a pair of victories for the Soaring Eagles. Woodard tallied eight points and eight rebounds on Monday in an 85-70 win over Fredonia. He followed on Tuesday with a career-best 20-point outing on 8-of-11 shooting from the field and five rebounds in just 18 minutes, leading Elmira to an 84-65 victory over Alfred State College.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Stephanie Jean-Baptiste, SUNY Brockport, Jr., G, Jersey City, NJ/John Jay
Jean-Baptiste poured in a career-high 33 points on 14-of-22 shooting the floor with a pair of made 3-pointers and three free throws in an 83-62 win over Penn State Behrend on Tuesday evening. She exploded for 22 second-half points, including 14 in the third quarter. It is Jean-Baptiste’s second E8 weekly honor of the season.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Anna Dening, Houghton, Fr., G, Lowville, NY/Lowville
Dening helped Houghton to a 76-35 win over Buffalo State on Tuesday to keep the Highlanders record unblemished on the season. She scored a career-high 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field, including a 4-for-5 performance from long range. Dening is leading the Empire 8 in 3-point percentage (45.7 percent) and has hit on 15-of-27 3-point attempts over the last four contests. It is her second E8 weekly honor of 2024-25.
MEN’S ICE HOCKEY
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Brian Scoville, Utica, Gr., D, Agawam, MA
Scoville was named to the Utica Thanksgiving Showcase Tournament All-Tournament Team tallying five points on a goal and four assists and was plus-5 in leading the Pioneers to wins over University of New England and Stevenson University. On Friday, Scoville recorded a goal and two assists and was plus-2 in Utica’s 6-5 win over University of New England. On Saturday, Scoville added two assists and was plus-3 in Utica’s 6-1 win over former UCHC institution Stevenson in the championship game.
GOALIE OF THE WEEK – Jacob Torgner, SUNY Geneseo, So., G, Mjolby, Sweden
Torgner earned his first shutout of the 2024-25 season, leading SUNY Geneseo to a 4-0 win over Williams College on Sunday. He made six saves in the opening period, five in the second stanza and 11 in the third period to improve to 4-0-0 on the season and keep the No. 4 Knights unbeaten in 2024-25.
