Nazareth Moves into Lead After Day Two of 2024 Empire 8 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships

WEBSTER, NY – Nazareth University moved into the lead after day two of the 2024 Empire 8 Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship, held in conjunction with the Allegheny Empire Championships at the Webster Aquatic Center on Thursday, February 17.
 
The Golden Flyers used a big evening, winning the final four events of the evening to move into first with 408 points, taking an 88-point lead over Hartwick College (320). Alfred University is third with 173 points.
 
Hartwick’s Ellie Baird hit the wall first in the 500-yard freestyle for the second time in three seasons, outlasting the field by nearly three seconds in a time of 5:13.10. Teammate Cate Russo was the E8 runner-up in the event.
 
Julie Filipski of Nazareth earned her second straight E8 title in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:10.26.
 
Filipski earned her second win of the night and third straight 200-yard freestyle relay title, teaming with Amy Barry, Ellen Burroughs, Caroline Coleman to  hit the wall first in 1:36.67.
 
Barry was also a two-time winner on Thursday, earning a close win in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.48 seconds.
 
Nazareth earned a 1-2 sweep in the 1-meter diving event. Alexa Rizzo emerged victorious for the second time in three seasons with a score of 486.75 to defeat defending champion and teammate Elizabeth Tripp, who had 458.85 points.
 
The three-time defending champion Golden Flyers extended their team lead to nearly 250 points after day two with 493 points. Hartwick is second with 244.5 points, while Alfred University is third with 217.5 points. Utica College is fourth overall with 90.5 points.
