Defending Champion Nazareth Leads After Day One of 2024 Empire 8 Women's Indoor Track and Field Championship

Defending champion Nazareth University is in the lead after day one of the 2024 Empire 8 Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championship, held at the Kerr Pegula Field House on the campus of Houghton University.
 
The Golden Flyers has 89 team points and holds a 32-point lead over second-place Utica University, who has 57 points. St. John Fisher University is third overall with 55 points, while host Houghton is fourth with 22 points.
 
Utica University standout Jane Fahy of Utica won her fourth consecutive E8 shot put championship, with a record-breaking toss of 14.20 meters, breaking the previous Empire 8 Championship meet record of 14.02, set by Katie Weeks of Stevens in 2019. Fahy’s throw is now the sixth-best in all of Division III this season.
 
Nora Devitt of Utica earned the win in the long jump, with a leap of 5.56 meters (18’3”) to claim her first E8 title.
 
Arianna McClendon of Utica led a 1-2 finish in the 400-meters, crossing the finish line a half second ahead of teammate Mackenzie Mix in a time of 59.73 seconds.

Nazareth sophomore Isabel Morse led a 1-2-3 sweep for the Golden Flyers in the pole vault, clearing 3.30 meters along with sister Rosie Morse and Kiara Tornusciolo. The Golden Flyers claimed 27 points in the event.

Houghton’s Noelle Linenfelser, the 2023 E8 Women’s Cross Country Champion, won the 5,000-meter run in a time of 18:40.62.
 
St. John Fisher’s Caitlin Voloshen took the lead midway through the race and took the mile by just over a second in a time of 5:22.36. Voloshen also ran the anchor leg to lead Fisher to the win in the distance medley relay, partnering with Allison List, Grace Dolan and Maggie Bacon to record a time of 12:59.65

Alfred’s Bianca Durso won the 2024 Empire 8 pentathlon by 66 points over Nazareth's Hannah Ragule, compiling 2,950 points. She was the top finisher in the high jump and was second best in the 800-meters.
 
Action continues Saturday morning from Nazareth at 10 a.m., as the Golden Flyers look to earn their first league title.
