Nazareth University repeated as league champions at the 2023-24 Empire 8 Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championship, held at Kerr Pegula Field House on the Campus of Houghton University on Feb. 23-24. The Golden Flyers used a balanced attack throughout the lineup to win their second consecutive league title, recording 193.3 points to defeat runner-up Utica University, who had 126 points. St. John Fisher University placed third with 81 points.
Houghton sophomore Noelle Linenfelser was named the 2024 Empire 8 Indoor Track Athlete of the Meet. She swept 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter run championships. Linenfelser won the 3,000-meters by nearly seven seconds in a time of 10:46.47. In addition, she earned the win in the 5,000-meters by just under 15 seconds in 18:40.62.
Utica junior Nora Devitt earned 2024 Empire 8 Championship Field Athlete of the Meet honors after winning the long jump with a leap of 5.56 meters and triple jump with a tremendous leap of 11.45 meters.
On Saturday, Houghton University first-year Victoria Brewster took both the 60-meter and 200-meter events. She won the 60-meters in a meet record time of 7.78 seconds and annexed the 200-meter dash in 25.90 seconds.
Utica’s 4 x 400-meter relay team of Mackenzie Mix, Janiaya Cruz-Bermudez, Abrianna Wadley, and Arianna McClendon set a meet record in winning the event by just 14 seconds in 4:00.12. Hannah Allison of Utica won the high jump, clearing 1.57 meters.
Alfred's Olivia Gilbert emerged victorious in the 800-meters for the second straight year, crossing the finish line first by just under four seconds in 2:18.28. Teammate Anne Splia took the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 9.32 seconds.
Nazareth senior Lea Richard won her fourth consecutive championship in the weight throw with an impressive toss of 17.56 meters.
