Below are the Empire 8 Players of the Week, released on April 22, 2024, for games played from April 15 – April 21, 2024. It is the 33rd Empire 8 weekly honors release of the 2023-24 season. Sports featured include baseball, softball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s tennis and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field.
BASEBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Carlos Fantauzzi, Keuka, Jr., OF, Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy
Fantauzzi enjoyed a tremendous week for the Keuka, culminating with a sweep of Alfred University. He hit .481 on the week, going 13-for-27 with four triples, a double, home run, nine runs scored, and 15 runs batted in over seven games. On Saturday, Fantauzzi went 4-for-5 with a double and triple and set a new Keuka College record with seven runs batted in against Alfred. He went 4-for-6 with two triples and five RBI in a 17-3 win the next day. In his collection of extra-base hits on the week, Fantauzzi had four triples giving him seven on the year. That leads the Empire 8 and is second-most in a single season in Keuka College history. It is Fantauzzi’s second E8 weekly honor.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Ethan Cetton, Houghton, Gr., P, Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks
Cetton allowed just one earned run in each of his two starts last week, a pair of complete-game efforts, while striking out 15 batters in 13 innings. He struck out 10 batters in six innings against Elmira on Monday. On Saturday, Cetton helped Houghton hand St. John Fisher only their second loss in Empire 8 conference play this season while ending the Highlanders' 13-game losing streak to Fisher that dated back to May of 2019, scattering five hits, while allowing one earned run and striking out five batters in a 3-2 win. Cetton has won six of his last seven decisions (while posting a 1.57 ERA over those seven appearances). He leads the Empire 8 in ERA (2.52) and strikeouts (55). It is Cetton’s second E8 weekly honor of 2024.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Jackson Frey, St. John Fisher, Fr., OF, Grand Island, NY/Grand Island
Frey hit .421 on the week with eight hits in 19 at-bats, six runs scored, two doubles and three RBI, as the Cardinals went 4-1 in his five games played. He was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and run batted in leading the Cardinals to a 6-0 win over RIT on Wednesday. Frey was 3-for-5 with a double in a 10-3 win at Houghton Friday and 2-for-4 with two runs scored in a 10-4 win Saturday. He recorded a 1.048 OPS on the week.
SOFTBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Meghan Neto, Alfred, Jr., IF/U, Miami, FL/Doral Academy Charter
Neto had a standout week, batting .611 (11-for-18) with nine RBI, three doubles, a home run, a walk, and a stolen base, while leading the Saxons to six consecutive Empire 8 wins during the week. Against Keuka College on Monday, Neto was 3-for-7 with an RBI. In the first leg of the double-header against the Wolves, Neto was credited with a stolen base. Against Russell Sage College Friday, Neto was 2-for-5 with an RBI. In the second game, Neto launched her second home run of the spring season. Neto saved her best set of performances against Utica University, going 6-for-6 with seven RBI. Between both games, Neto recorded three doubles and drew one walk. In the field this past week, Neto was responsible for five putouts for the Saxons. She finished the week with a 1.594 OPS.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Cassidy Ormond, St. John Fisher, Jr., P, Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse
Ormond earned a pair of wins during the week, allowing just two hits, two walks and one run, while striking out 15 batters over 11 innings for the Cardinals. On Tuesday, she carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before allowing a hit with one out in Fisher’s 6-0 win. She struck out seven batters in the complete-game one-hitter. She followed that up by striking out eight batters and allowing just one hit and one run over four innings in a 9-1 win over Elmira Saturday. It is her second straight E8 weekly accolade and third overall of the season.
MEN’S GOLF
CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Ryan Arp, Russell Sage, Fr., Greenville, NY/Greenville CAD
Arp tied for medalist honors by shooting a round of 78 (plus-7) at the Nazareth University Spring Invitational on Sunday, held at Wildwood Country Club.
CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Vincent Falgiatano, Nazareth, Fr., Syracuse, NY/Bishop Grimes
Falgiatano tied for medalist honors by shooting a round of 78 (plus-7) at the Nazareth University Spring Invitational on Sunday, held at Wildwood Country Club. He helped lead Nazareth to a second-place team finish. It is Falgiatano’s second E8 weekly honor of the year.
MEN’S LACROSSE
CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Ryan Considine, Utica, Fr., A, Syracuse, NY/West Genesee
Considine tied the Utica single-game record book with a career-best 10 points on five goals and five assists in a 16-10 win over Keuka on Wednesday afternoon. He had two goals and an assist in the opening quarter, then tallied three goals and two assists the third quarter. Considine had 11 shots, nine of which were on goal.
CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Matthew Kemmis, St. John Fisher, Sr., A, Jamesville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt
Kemmis helped lead St. John Fisher to two league wins during the week, totaling 10 goals and two assists for 12 points, while adding eight ground balls. Against Alfred in a mid-week matchup, Kemmis scored six goals, while assisting on two more for eight points. On senior day on Saturday, he scored four goals, with five ground balls in a win over Russell Sage. It is Kemmis’ third E8 weekly honor of the season.
GOALIE OF THE WEEK – Ben Hammond, St. John Fisher, Sr., G, Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius
Hammond made 14 saves and allowed just three goals over 70 minutes of action in helping lead the Cardinals to two Empire 8 wins during the week. He stopped 12 shots and allowed three goals in just over 40 minutes in a win over Alfred on Wednesday. On Saturday, Hammond made a pair of saves and did not allow a goal in a win over Russell Sage College. He finished the week with an .824 save percentage. It is Hammond’s second straight and fourth E8 weekly honor of 2024.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Sydney Carpenter, St. John Fisher, Jr., A, Rochester, NY/Hilton
Carpenter recorded 12 points this week on three goals and nine assists, while also recording 22 draw controls, five ground balls and five caused turnovers in a pair of Empire 8 wins. On Wednesday, Carpenter had seven points on a goal and six assists, 11 draw controls, five caused turnovers and four ground balls in a win over Alfred. She followed that up with two goals, three assists and 11 draw controls in a win over Nazareth Saturday. It is Carpenter’s second straight E8 weekly accolade of the season.
GOALIE OF THE WEEK – Kaylee Gadol, St. John Fisher, Fr., G, Otisville, NY/Minisink Valley
Gadol helped lead the Cardinals to two wins and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Empire 8 Championship Tournament, making nine saves and allowing just six goals during the week. She played the first half in St. John Fisher’s win over Alfred Wednesday and stopped eight shots over the first three quarters in a 19-6 win over Nazareth on Saturday.
MEN’S TENNIS
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Levi Webb, Houghton, Sr., Houghton, NY/Fillmore Central
Webb won both singles and both doubles matches during the week, helping Houghton clinch the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Empire 8 Men’s Tennis Championship Tournament. On Friday, Webb teamed with Nolan Zach at first doubles to earn an 8-3 win at first doubles and earned a 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 win at second singles, as Houghton defeated Nazareth, 6-3. Webb. And Zach won 8-6 at first doubles and Webb rolled to a 6-4, 6-2 win at second singles, as Houghton locked up the regular season title with a 7-2 win over St. John Fisher. It is Webb’s second E8 honor of the season.
MEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Amos Bixler, Houghton, So., Middle Distance, Dalton, OH/Central Christian
Bixler took first place in the 800-meter run at the Alfred State Alumni Invitational in a time of 1:57.94, which is the top time in the Empire 8 this season. Bixler also competed in the 4 x 400-meter relay, helping his team finish in a time of 3:34.90, which is the third fastest time in the Empire 8 this season.
FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Hunter Logan, Utica, Sr., Throws, Fort Plain, NY/Herkimer County Community College
Logan turned in a fantastic weekend winning the shot put event at the Bobbi Palma Classic on Friday with a top throw of 16.89 meters that secured the win. That throw moved Logan into sixth among all NCAA Division III student-athletes in the event. Logan also won the Cortland Classic shot put on Saturday with a top mark of 16.53 meters, which was his second best mark of the season and fifth time winning the event this season.
WOMEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Mackenzie Mix, Utica, Jr., Sprints, Camden, NY/Camden
Mix enjoyed three top-four finishes at the Cortland Classic on Saturday. In the 100-meter dash finals, Mix placed second in a time of 12.31 seconds, which is a new season-best time, first in the E8 and top-75 nationally. In the 400-meter hurdles, Mix also placed second with her time of 1:09.18. Mix also teamed with Zeniyah Gholson, Janaiya Cruz-Bermudez, and Laura Meade in the 4x100-meter relay, crossing the finish line in a time of 50.53 seconds to place fourth.
FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Jane Fahy, Utica, Gr., Throws, Oriskany, NY/Oriskany
Fahy shattered her own Empire 8 record and took first place in the shot put at the Bobbi Palma Classic over the weekend with a throw of 14.42 meters. Fahy also won the Cortland Classic shot put with a mark of 14.30m to record her fifth shot put win of the season. She is currently ranked fourth nationally in the event. It is Fahy’s second E8 weekly accolade of the spring.
