The Empire 8 Conference announced its 2024 Empire 8 Baseball Championship All-Tournament Team on Wednesday, May 15. Senior third baseman James Murphy of St. John Fisher University was named the Empire 8 Tournament Most Valuable Player after leading the Cardinals to their fourth straight league title and sixth in program history.
Murphy enjoyed a tremendous tournament, batting .417 (5-for-12) with a home run, two double, four runs scored, and 11 RBI in the three St. John Fisher wins over the weekend. On Thursday, Murphy was 2-for-5 with a double and four RBI in St. John Fisher’s 15-6 win over Utica University and followed that up by hitting a walk-off, two-run home run in the bottom of the tenth inning to lead the Cardinals to a 5-3 win over Houghton University Friday in the winner’s bracket. Murphy reached base four times and hit a clutch three-run double in the bottom of the fourth inning that gave the Cardinals the lead for good in the 13-4 championship clinching win over Utica in the title game Saturday. Murphy was one of four St. John Fisher student-athletes to earn All-Tournament Team honors.
