MEDFORD, MA – The St. John Fisher University softball team competed in day two of the Medford Regional, hosted by Tufts University. The Cardinals were victorious in Game four against Western New England before falling to the Jumbos in the final game of the day. St. John Fisher, the 2024 Empire 8 Champions, ended the 2024 season with a 35-7 record.
Game One: St. John Fisher University 2 – Western New England 1
The Cardinals got on the board first with a home run by Emily McManus in the second inning. That was her 13th home run of the season and puts her in a tie for second for home runs in a season in program history. The Golden Bears tied the game in the top of the fourth, but Cassidy Ormond was able to work out of more trouble and kept the score at 1-1. In the bottom of the sixth, after a walk by Taylor Shackleton and double by McManus to move her to third, Mari Spitz hit a soft fielders choice to the pitcher that was enough to score the game winning run. Ormond worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning to secure the victory.
Ormond pitched the complete seven inning game, allowing one run on six hits, two walks and struck out five. McManus was the only Cardinal with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a run and RBI.
Game Two: St. John Fisher University 0 – Tufts University 2
Despite the initial single, Ainsley Evanetski worked two quick outs in the first, but a hit by Tufts and error by Fisher allowed for two runs to cross home plate and the Cardinals face an early deficit. After 1-2-3 innings for Fisher in the middle innings, the bats began to come alive late. Spitz reached on a single to right field in the fifth inning and Tori LoPresto hit a bloop single to center field that go action on the base paths, but the Cardinals were unable to push a run across.
Evanetski drew the start and pitched 5.2 innings, allowing six total runs on nine hits.
