DALLAS, PA – The St. John Fisher University baseball team (26-18) fell to a late rally by the host school, Misericordia Uninversity (34-9), 5-2 on Friday to open the 2024 NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament Dallas Regional.
The Cardinals jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, as graduate student first baseman Brian Norsen hit a two-out single and then moved to third when senior third baseman James Murphy doubled. Junior Dominic Guccia then singled to left, bringing both Norsen and Murphy home to give Fisher the 2-0 lead.
Sophomore pitcher Ethan Fulton, held the Cougars hitless until there were two outs in the sixth inning. He brought a shutout into the seventh inning, when Misericordia scored three to take the lead, 3-2. Fulton ultimately ended the day going 6.1 innings, allowing six hits, three earned runs, and striking out two.
A home run in the eighth extended the Misericordia lead to 5-2, and the Cardinals were unable to come back, leading to the defeat.
Norsen went 2-for-4 with a run scored at the plate for the day, while senior catcher Andrew Roman finished the day 2-for-3.
Despite the loss, the Cardinals remain alive in the NCAA tournament and would still advance if they win all of their remaining games in the double elimination regionals. They will play Middlebury College in an elimination game on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m.
