James Murphy Named to ABCA/Rawlings Division III Gold Glove Team; E8 Trio Earns Region III All-Defensive Team Honors

Senior third baseman James Murphy of the St. John Fisher University baseball team was named to the 2024 ABCA/Rawlings Division III Gold Glove Team. Murphy is the first player in program history to earn the award. Murphy, St. John Fisher first baseman Brian Norsen and Houghton University outfielder Jeremey Wilcox were also named to the NCAA Division III Region 3 All-Defensive Team.

The American Baseball Coaches Association and Rawlings Sporting Goods have announced the 2024 ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove teams in all eight divisions of collegiate and high school baseball. The ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove winners have been selected since 2007 in the collegiate and high school ranks and have featured many future Major League Baseball players. The ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove Awards are selected by ABCA coaches committees at each level: NCAA Div. I, II & III, NAIA, NJCAA Div. I, II & III, Pacific Association Division, and High School. The ABCA/Rawlings Award Program is one of the most comprehensive in all of sports, honoring All-America and Gold Glove teams in nine divisions of amateur baseball as well as All-Region teams in five divisions. 

After being named Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Year, First-Team All-Conference, First-Team All-Region and a Fourth-Team All-American, Murphy now adds a Gold Glove to his name. On defense this season, the Niskayuna, NY native helped turn 12 double plays from third base, the top number from Empire 8 third basemen. Murphy led all players in assists this season, with 107. His .965 fielding percentage was the best in the Empire 8 for third basemen, and 19th overall.

Norsen, a graduate student from Hamburg, NY, recorded a .987 fielding percentage spanning 385 chances at first base in 2024. He helped he Cardinals turn 28 double plays and had 19 assists on the season. In addition, the All-Empire 8 second team selection and ABCA/Rawlings All-Region pick hit .391 with 10 home runs and 51 RBI. Norsen hit .356 in his collegiate career with 42 homers and 230 RBI, while drawing 120 walks. On the defensive side, Norsen had 1,408 putouts and 61 assists for a career .985 fielding percentage.

Wilcox is one of nine players to earn the honor from the region and joins two others from the Empire 8 Conference. The senior pitcher/outfielder did not commit an error during the season, recording 108 putouts and three assists in 111 chances. A native of Silver Creek, NY, Wilcox also earned Empire 8 Second Team honors following the season after hitting .323.
