St. John Fisher University senior third baseman James Murphy was named a 2024 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings Fourth Team All-America selection.
The ABCA All-America team was first recognized in 1949 and now includes nine divisions: NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA Divisions I, II and III, Pacific Association Division, and high school. ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove teams were first recognized in 2007. The D3baseball.com selections Players were nominated for these awards by the Sports Information Directors at the various schools.
Murpjy has earned countless accolades this Spring for the Cardinals, who won their fourth straight Empire 8 Championship in 2024. He earned All-Empire 8 first team honors for the third time in his career and ABCA/Rawlings Region III first team All-Region accolades and garnered D3baseball.com second team all-region. In addition, Murphy was named the 2024 Empire 8 Championship Tournament Most Valuable Player.
Murphy led all Empire 8 student-athletes with 70 hits, 63 runs scored, 52 runs batted in and 33 stolen bases to go along with 15 doubles, five triples, four home runs, 107 total bases, a .395 batting average, .491 on-base percentage, .605 slugging percentage and a 1.096 OPS in 45 games played. In 18 regular season E8 contests, Murphy hit an incredible .547 (35-for-64) with 34 runs scored, six doubles, four triples and 28 RBI. He also maintained a 1.452 OPS. He also stole 18 bases in league play.
Murphy enjoyed a tremendous 2024 E8 Tournament, batting .417 (5-for-12) with a home run, two double, four runs scored, and 11 RBI in the three St. John Fisher wins. He hit a walk-off, two-run home run in the bottom of the tenth inning to lead the Cardinals to a 5-3 win over Houghton University in the winner’s bracket and reached base four times and hit a clutch three-run double in the bottom of the fourth inning that gave the Cardinals the lead for good in the 13-4 championship clinching win over Utica in the title game.
In four seasons at St. John Fisher, Murphy has a .329 career batting average with 210 hits, 187 runs scored, 47 doubles, 17 triples, 27 home runs and 189 runs batted in, while playing in and starting 167 contests.
