SUNY Cortland, the defending NCAA Division III Champion, is ranked No. 2 in both the 2024
D3football.com and AFCAHUDL Division III preseason polls. The D3football.com Top-25 is voted on by a panel of 25 coaches, Sports Information Directors and media members from across the country, and is published weekly. Points are awarded on a 25-24-23-22-etc. basis.
The Red Dragons won their fifth Empire 8 title in 2023 and captured its first-ever Division III national title with a thrilling 38-37 victory over unbeaten and defending champion North Central College (Ill.) in the 50th Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl on Dec. 15, 2023.
Cortland closed the season with a 14-1 record and finished the year with a school-record 12-game win streak. Cortland's previous best national finishes were quarterfinal showings in 1988 and 2008. Cortland is the first school from the state of New York to win a Division III football title since Ithaca in 1991 and the first Empire 8 NCAA National Champion team.
The 2024 regular season for all seven Empire 8 institutions begins the weekend of Sept. 5-7 and concludes on Nov. 16. League play begind right away in week one with Cortland at Hilbert and continues on Oct. 5. Cortland will play No. 20 Ithaca in the annual Cortaca Jug on Nov. 16. The 2024 Empire 8 champion receives an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Championship.
