Three Empire 8 men's cross country programs are ranked in the 2024 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) preseason rankings. SUNY Geneseo is ranked No. 16 and SUNY Brockport is ranked No. 30 in the USTFCCCA NCAA Division III Preseason National Coaches Poll. In addition, Geneseo is the top-ranked team in the USTFCCCA Niagara Region rankings, while SUNY Brockport is No. 3 and Houghton University is No. 9.
National Coaches’ Polls are presented by AthleticNET. Regional Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning teams’ strength with current season results (if applicable) in determining a rank-order of squad potential. Only USTFCCCA member programs are eligible to receive a ranking. Teams with provisional status within the region may be ranked.
Geneseo won both the SUNYAC and Niagara Region Championships last year and sent a team to nationals for the 20th straight season. They will be returning six of their seven top runners and expect to continue their success into the 2024 season.
Brockport is fresh off of a SUNYAC runner-up place finish in the 2023 Championship. They finished third in the Niagara Region Championship last season as well. The Golden Eagles sent three runners to compete in the NCAA Championships, two of which will be back to race this season.
Houghton, the reigning 2023 Empire 8 Champions, are expected to be tough competitors this season. They will be returning two Empire 8 first team and All-Niagara Region selections for the 2024 season.
The 2024 regular season for all Empire 8 Institutions begins Friday, August 30. The Empire 8 Championship will be held on Saturday November 2 at Houghton University.
