Empire 8 Quartet Named to D3football.com Team of the Week

Wide receiver/kick returner Jaden AlfanoStJohn of SUNY Cortland, safety Kyle Haettich of SUNY Brockport, tight end Quamel Jarvis of SUNY Morrisville and defensive tackle John Stroughn of Utica University were named to the D3football.com Team of the Week on Tuesday, Sept. 24.

AlfanoStJohn, a senior wide receiver/kick returner from from Westhampton, NY, was named the Empire 8 Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday. AlfanoStJohn returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown to give SUNY Cortland its first score and cut an early deficit to 14-7 in the second-ranked Red Dragons' eventual 40-38 win at 11th-ranked Susquehanna. He's only the third player in school history, and the first since 2003, to return a kickoff 100 yards. AlfanoStJohn finished with five kickoff returns for 193 yards on the day.

Haettich, a fifth-year safety from Buffalo, NY and a 2024 D3football.com Preseason All-American, was named the Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. He had two key interceptions in the final three minutes, as SUNY Brockport held on to defeat Wilkes University, 31-17 as part of Homecoming Weekend Saturday. With Brockport leading 24-17 and Wilkes driving to try and tie the game, Haettich intercepted a pass and returned it 93 yards for a touchdown to put Brockport up 31-17 with 2:48 remaining. His second interception came with less than 10 seconds on the clock, to end Wilkes’ final possession. Haettich also had five total tackles (three solo), including a tackle for a loss.

Jarvis, a senior tight end from Rochester, NY, collected 143 yards from scrimmage in a 28-27 loss to Catholic, registering 97 yards on seven receptions with a touchdown. He added 46 yards rushing on two carries for the Mustangs, with a long run of 31 yards. Jarvis' score came in the first quarter on a 32-yard TD pass to put Morrisville on the board. He has 12 catches for 203 yards and three carries for 50 yards with two scores in a pair of games this season.

Stroughn, a graduate student from Baldwin, NY, disrupted the Lycoming offensive all afternoon from his defensive line position during Utica's 42-17 win Saturday. He recorded two tackles for loss and a sack as part of his four-tackle afternoon. Stroughn also altered the Warriors' offensive plans all day, recording four quarterback hurries. He was a 2023 AFCA All-American and is off to another strong start in 2024 with 14 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, four sacks and seven quartback hurries through three games.

Four E8 teams are in action this weekend. Morrisville hosts Moravian at noon, while Alfred hosts against Catholic at 1 p.m. Hilbert is at Lycoming, while St. John Fisher heads the Wilkes, League play for all eight E8 squads begins on Oct. 5.
