SUNY Brockport senior goalkeeper Ella Buchanan (Barnevald, NY/Holland Patent) and SUNY Geneseo junior forward Sam Lewis (East Rochester, NY/East Rochester) swept National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III weekly honors on Wednesday, Sept. 4 for games played Aug. 30-Sept. 1. Buchanan was named the NFHCA Division III Defensive Player of the Week, while Lewis garnered Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Buchanan, who was also named the Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, stopped 13-of-14 shots for a .929 save percentage and 0.46 goals against average over the opening weekend of play. She began the week by stopping 13 of 14 shots in a thrilling 2-1 double overtime win over Juniata College on Aug. 30. Eight of her 13 saves came in the opening half. Buchanan followed that up by earning her first shutout of the season in a 4-0 win over against Allegheny College on Sept. 1.

Buchanan, who was recently named a 2024 NFHCA Division III Player to Watch and garnered 2023 NFHCA All-Region second team honors, improved to 21-13 in her career with a 1.61 goals against average and an .816 save percentage. She earned the fifth shutout of her career on Sunday.

Lewis, who was previously named Empire 8 Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, tallied three goals and two assists for eight points over the opening weekend, helping the Knights to two road wins over Liberty League opponents to start the 2024 campaign. On Aug. 30, Lewis assisted on a pair of goals, including the game-winner, as Geneseo rallied from 2-0 down to defeat Rensselaer, 3-2. Less than 24 hours later, Lewis recorded a hat-trick, scoring Geneseo’s first, second and fourth goals of the game in a 5-0 victory over Vassar.

She now has 43 career points on 16 goals and 11 assists in 39 career games.

Last season, a pair of St. John Fisher University standouts, Emma Cooper and Sophia Trozzi earned NFHCA weekly accolades on Oct. 4 and Oct. 11, 2023.

Both teams are right back in action. Geneseo hosts William Smith College on Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m., while Brockport hosts University of Rochester at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5.
