McConnell Earns 100th Career Win; Geneseo Clinches at Least Share of 2025 E8 Field Hockey Regular Season Crown

GENESEO, NY - SUNY Geneseo field hockey head coach, Margaret McConnell, earned her 100th career win on Saturday afternoon as the Knights defeated Nazareth, 4-0. The victory improves their record to 17-1 overall and 9-0 in the Empire 8, and they currently hold a 13-game win streak. The win also clinched at least a share of the 2025 Empire 8 Regular Season title and top-seed in the upcoming Empire 8 Tourmament for the defending champion Knights.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Knights put the pressure on Nazareth early, out-shooting the Golden Flyers 7-0 in the first quarter. However, the Nazareth defense held strong and kept Geneseo out of the goal and the teams entered the second quarter tied at 0-0.
  • Geneseo broke through with about six minutes left to play in the half, with Aubree Wenner putting the Knights ahead. Less than a minute later, Sam Lewis sent a pass to Ella Greico who scored the second goal for Geneseo to put them ahead 2-0 before halftime.
  • The Knights recorded 10 shots and seven penalty corners in the third quarter, but couldn't extend their lead past 2-0.
  • In the final 15 minutes, Greico tallied her second goal of the game to make it 3-0, then Grace Murphy tacked on the final goal of the game as Geneseo earned the 4-0 victory.
QUICK FACTS:
  • McConnell joins Jess Seren as the only other coach in program history to surpass the 100 career win mark. McConnell now boasts a record of 100-32, a 75.76 win percentage.
  • Greico now has 21 goals and seven assists this season for a team-best 49 points, while Wenner has 12 goals and Murphy, two.
  • Bridget Schafer recorded her eighth shutout of the year in goal.
  • The Knights secured the No. 1 seed for the Empire 8 postseason with the win, and can clinch sole possession of the Empire 8 regular season title with a win in their final game.
