CLINTON, NY - The SUNY Geneseo field hockey team saw its season come to a close on Wednesday evening, falling in a hard-fought double overtime game to Hamilton, 2-1. The Knights end the season with the best record in program history at 20-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The first quarter saw very little offensive action as both teams got a feel for the difficult conditions, with the Continentals recording the only shot of the quarter.
  • The Continentals were the first to get on the scoreobard, scoring in the 25th minute. However, the Knights answered back with less than a minute to go before halftime. Geneseo earned a penalty corner with thirty seconds to go, then Sam Lewis found the back of the goal to tie the game.
  • The Knights defense continued to step up, in the second half, keeping Hamilton off the scoreboard despite facing nine penalty corners and 10 shots. The impressive defensive effort sent the game into overtime.
  • In the first overtime period, goalkeeper Bridget Schafer came in clutch for the Knights, making four saves, including a diving save across the goal off a penalty corner. Early in the second overtime, the Continentals were finally able to break through Geneseo's defense early in the second overtime to escape with the 2-1 victory.
QUICK FACTS:
  • Lewis recorded her 100th career point with the goal in the game, becoming the seventh player in program history to reach the milestone after teammate Ella Greico reached the mark earlier this season.
  • The Knights also set a new team record for goals in a season with 101, breaking the mark set by the 2019 team at 88.
  • Schafer made seven saves in goal to help lead the Knights defense.
