NORTON, MA - The SUNY Geneseo men's soccer team fell to No.14 Middlebury in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, 2-1. The Knights end their season with an overall record of 13-6-1, marking the team's best finish since 2006.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Knights had a strong defensive presence throughout the first half, keeping the Panthers to just three shots on net and went into half tied 0-0.
- Middlebury took the lead in the second half, scoring two unanswered goals to take control of the game.
- Dylan Thody put the Knights on the board, drilling home a PK in the 84th minute. Geneseo continued to press in the final minutes, securing a free kick with thirteen seconds left. Despite a well-placed ball into the box from Max Crothall, Middlebury was able to make the save, winning 2-1 over Geneseo.
QUIICK FACTS:
- This is Geneseo's first appearance in the tournament since 2006 and third time in program history.
- Dylan Thody ends his career at Geneseo with an incredible season, leading the team with 16 goals, nine assists and was name the Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Year.
- Thody's 16 goals moves him into second all-time in program history for goals in a season, tying Ed Usinger from 1970 and 1972, and coming up one short of Jim Clar's record of 17 goals in 1988. Thody becomes just the second player since 1993 to score 13 or more goals in a season.
- Geneseo outscored their opponents 50-23, averaging 2.27 goals per game, with nine Knights tallying goals this season.
