No. 1 SUNY Geneseo and No. 3 Nazareth To Meet for 2025 Empire 8 Field Hockey Championship After Semifinal Victories

2025 E8 Field Hockey Championship to take place Saturday, Nov. 8 from Geneseo; Knights will look to repeat as league champions

Top-seed SUNY Geneseo (19-1) and No. 3 seed Nazareth University (14-5) will meet for the 2025 Empire 8 Field Hockey Championship after earning semifinal victories on Wednesday afternoon. The Knights defeated No. 4 seed St. John Fisher University, 6-0 from College Stadium, Nazareth went on the road and defeated No. 2 Hartwick College, 3-2 in overtime from Wright Stadium.

SUNY Geneseo will host Nazareth in the championship game on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 12 p.m. from College Stadium. Geneseo defeated Nazareth by a score of 4-0 from NLPA Stadium in Pittsford, NY on Oct. 25. Ella Greico scored a pair of goals for the Knights, as head coach Margaret McConnell won her 100th game at the helm of the Knights. Geneseo held a 29-7 edge in shots and 14-6 advantage in penalty corners.

SUNY Geneseo is attempting to win its second consecutive league title in as many seasons as a league member. Nazareth is in the E8 title game for the first time since 2019 and is looking to win its first league championship since 2007. The Empire 8 Champion will receive an automatic berth into the 2025 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament, which starts on Nov. 12.

The SUNY Geneseo field hockey team, ranked 25th in the most recent NCAA Division III Field Hockey National Power Index, was victorious in the Empire 8 semifinals over St. John Fisher University on Wednesday afternoon, rolling to a 6-0 win. Geneseo advances to the Empire 8 Championship game with the win and improves their record to 19-1 on the season. St. John Fisher had its season come to an end with a 10-8  record.

The Knights dominated play throughout, out-shooting Fisher 21-4 and held a 12-5 advantage in penalty corners. Geneseo scored two first quarter goals and three more in the second quarter to lead 5-0 at the break.
 
Junior Ella Greico recorded her second straight seven-point game, this time with the hat-trick in addition to an assist. She now has a league-high 60 points on 26 goals and eight assists.

Aubree Wenner scored two goals and added an assist for the Knights, while Sam Lewis had a goal and two assists. Bridget Schafer made a pair of saves to record the shutout.

NO. 3 NAZARETH 3, NO. 2 HARTWICK 2 (OT)
Isabel Porterfield scored her second goal of the game, 4:21 into overtime to lift Nazareth to a 3-2 win over Hartwick (11-6) from Wright Stadium. The win advances Nazareth to its first E8 Championship Final since 2019 and first under second-year Head Coach Kelsey Devine

Porterfield scored off a rebound on a penalty corner after the Golden Flyers delivered constant pressure over the first four minutes of extra time. Porterfield registered her first career game-winning goal in overtime, her eighth of the season. With two in the victory over Hartwick, the junior posted back-to-back two goal games after she netted two in the team's quarterfinal win over No. 6 SUNY Brockport. 
 
Nazareth fell behind early after an early Hartwick goal from Kayla Kinkel until Hannah Janes scored off a feed from Michaela Cushman to even the game at 1-1 after the first quarter. 
The Golden Flyers generated several scoring chances in the second quarter, including a penalty stroke late in the frame, but the attempt was stopped by the Hawks to keep the game tied at halftime.

Hartwick applied continued offensive pressure with multiple penalty corners but goalkeeper Lauren Bachner and the Nazareth defense stood tall to keep the third quarter scoreless. Bachner would make nine saves overall in the game.

The Hawks converted a penalty stroke from Kayla Klotz midway through the quarter to regain a 2-1 lead before Porterfield Isabel Porterfield answered for the Golden Flyers, burying the equalizer with five minutes left in regulation to force overtime.

Michaela Cushman continued to add to her program-record 45 single-season point total with one assist against Hartwick. Cushman ranks second in the Empire 8 with 2.44 points and .944 goals per game.
