Katie Moravec Reaches 1,000 Career Points In St. John Fisher's Win Over Utica

Cardinals move to 10-0 in Empire 8 play

UTICA, NY – Senior guard Katie Moravec surpassed 1,000 career points as the St. John Fisher women's basketball team remained unbeaten in Empire 8 Conference play with a 79-69 win over Utica on Friday night at the Clark Athletic Center. 

The Cardinals improved to 15-4 overall (10-0 Empire 8), while the Pioneers fell to 3-16 on the season (1-9 Empire 8). The victory marked Fisher's 23rd in a row over Utica, a streak that began in January 2013. 

Moravec, who scored 20 points while shooting 8 of 17 from the field, joined Fisher's 1,000-point club with a layup midway through the third quarter. She's one of two active St. John Fisher players with more than 1,000 or more career points (fellow senior guard Sidney Tomasso is the other). 

 How It Happened

  • The Cardinals went on a 12-2 run in the second quarter to take a 16-point lead, 36-20. Tomasso led Fisher with four points in that stretch, while Moravec had four and sophomore forward Alexa Gibson two. 

  • The Cardinals put the game further out of reach in the third quarter, pushing their lead to a game-high 23 points with a 10-3 run. Freshman forward Danielle Seamon had a team-high four points in that spurt. 

Game Notes

  • Tomasso, once again making a case to be the Empire 8 Player of the Year, led the Cardinals with 25 points and 13 rebounds as part of her seventh double-double of the season. She has 11 total in her collegiate career. She shot 7 of 15 overall, 3 of 6 from three and 8 of 11 from the foul line. 

  • Tomasso has played in 18 of Fisher's 19 games this season and has scored more than 15 points in all but one. She has scored 20-plus points in nine of those games.

  •  Moravec has scored 15 or more points in 12 of the Cardinals' 19 games. She has amassed 20 or more nine times, including in four of the last six games. 

  • Moravec also led the Cardinals with five steals and four assists, both categories in which she leads the team this season. 

  • Moravec has tallied four or more steals in five contests this season.

  • Junior guard Presleigh Brunner also scored in double figures, chipping in 11 points while shooting 5 of 14 overall.  

  • The Cardinals outscored Utica 29-10 off turnovers.
