WEBSTER, NY – SUNY Geneseo won three of four events and leads day one of the 2025 Empire 8 Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship, held the Webster Aquatic Center on Wednesday, February 19.
The nationally-ranked Knights have 265 team points to pace the field with ahead of six-time defending champion Nazareth University, who has 122 points, SUNY Brockport with 121, Hartwick College in fourth with 120 points and Alfred University, who has 63 points.
Abby Funk of SUNY Geneseo kicked off the evening by winning the 500-yard freestyle by just over a seconds over teammate Hannah Brockman with a time of 5:02.75.
Emily LeFrois-Heath of Nazareth won the 200-yard individual medley by just over two seconds in a snappy time of 2:07.17.
Alex Sotek of SUNY Geneseo recorded an NCAA “B” cut time in winning the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 23.28 seconds. Elizabeth Sagan of SUNY Brockport placed second.
Sotek teamed with Nina Chicatelli, Emily Thomas and Alise Hale to end the evening by setting an Empire 8 Championship record in the 400-yard medley relay, winning by more than 11 seconds in a time of 3:47.49, which is also an NCAA “B” cut qualifying time. That time broke an eight-year old E8 Championship record held by Stevens.
