WEBSTER, NY – SUNY Geneseo emerged victorious as action wrapped up at the four-day 2025 Empire 8 Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship, held at the Webster Aquatic Center on Saturday, Feb. 22.
The nationally-ranked Knights finished with 1,165 team points to pace the field with ahead of Hartwick College, who finished with 672 points and SUNY Brockport, who was third with 637. Six-time defending champion Nazareth University had its title run ended, finishing fourth with 553 points, while Alfred University placed fifth with 369 points.
Alisa Hale of Geneseo was named the 2025 Empire 8 Swimmer of the Meet, while Elizabeth Tripp of Nazareth was named Diver of the Meet for the second straight season.
Abby Funk of Geneseo began the final evening by winning the 1,650-yard freestyle by just over seven seconds over teammate Hannah Brockman in an NCAA “B” cut qualifying time of 17:19.75.
Alex Sotek of Geneseo won her second sprint freestyle event of the week, taking the 100-yard freestyle 51.97 seconds as she nipped Elizabeth Sagan of Brockport by 57 one-hundredths of a second.
Nina Chicatelli of Geneseo won a extremely tight 200-yard backstroke final by just 34 one-hundredths of a second over Elizabeth Share of Alfred in a time of 2:04.88. It was nearly a duplicate finish from two nights ago in the 100-yard backstroke final when Chicatelli nipped Share by 37 one-hundredths of a second.
Two-time reigning Empire 8 Swimmer of the Year Courtney Pierce won the 200-yard breaststroke for the third straight season in a personal record time of 2:20.50.
Nazareth’s Elizabeth Tripp won her third straight Empire 8 Championship in the 3-meter diving event with a score of 474.85 after recording a score of 508.25 in the prelims earlier on Saturday. Tripp has now won five Empire 8 Diving Championship events (2023 and 2025 1-meter titles).
Geneseo ended the meet with a with by nearly three seconds in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as the quartet of Alex Sotek, Erin Johannsen, Nina Chicatelli, and Courtney Sorbello won in a time of 3:29.96.
