SUNY Geneseo leads after day one of 2025 Empire 8 Men's Indoor Track and Championship

Nationally-ranked SUNY Geneseo holds the lead after Friday’s action at the 2025 Empire 8 Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championship, held the Todd and Jen Hutton Sports and Recreation Center on the campus of Utica University.

The Knights, who are looking for their first league title in their first season as a league member, have 97.5 team points, 35 ahead of SUNY Brockport, who has 62.5 points. St. John Fisher University is third overall with 39.5 points and host Utica is right behind in fourth with 32. Two-time E8 defending champion Nazareth University is fifth overall with 26.5 points.
 
All-American Hunter Logan of Utica, who is among the top throwers in the nation, won the shot put for the fourth consecutive season with a toss of 15.43 meters.
 
Jonathan Zavala of SUNY Brockport broke a 17-year-old Empire 8 record originally held by former RIT All-American Michael Harbarger (4:10.70) in the mile, crossing the finish line first in a won the mile in a time of 4:10.28, winning by just over two seconds over Mike Taranto of SUNY Geneseo.
 
SUNY Geneseo’s Jacob Miller took the 400-meter dash in a meet record time of 48.27 seconds. Teammate Charlie Wilson led a 1-2-3-4 finish for Geneseo in the 5,000-meters in a time of 14:49.94.

Hayden Penna of St. John Fisher won the pole vault for the second straight season, clearing 4.60 meters, while teammate Manuel Sepulveda took the long jump with a leap of 7.19 meters, just shy of the E8 Championship record.
 
SUNY Geneseo’s distance medley relay team of Logan Baker, Arjun Ojha, Matthew Sheehan, Brian Kenny emerged victorious by just under two seconds over defending champion Utica in a time of 10:24.55.

SUNY Brockport’s Gabe Giannini holds a 33-point lead over Daniel Pagan of SUNY Geneseo in the heptathlon after four events Friday. Giannini won the 60-meters and long jump Friday. The group will compete in the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meters Saturday to crown a league champion.
 
Action resumes on Saturday at 11 a.m.
