Four Records Fall, as SUNY Geneseo leads after Day One of 2025 Empire 8 Women's Indoor Track and Championship

Nationally-ranked SUNY Geneseo set four Championship records and holds the lead after Friday’s action at the 2025 Empire 8 Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championship, held the Todd and Jen Hutton Sports and Recreation Center on the campus of Utica University.

The Knights, who are looking for their first league title in their first season as a league member, has 137 points, nearly 80 points ahead of two-time defending champion Nazareth University, who has 59 points. SUNY Brockport is third in the league with 49 points, while St. John Fisher is fourth with 41.
 
Janelle Eckl of SUNY Geneseo won the 2025 Empire 8 pentathlon by 299 points over teammate Lanna Wandy, compiling a championship record 3,646 points, which is currently the second best performance in all of Division III this season. She was the top finisher in the 800-meters, high jump and long jump.
 
Sierra Doody of SUNY Geneseo opened the day by smashing a meet record in winning the mile run by nearly three seconds over Mia Vizcaino of SUNY Brockport in a time of 5:00.33.
 
Penelope Greene, the 2024 Empire 8 Cross Country Runner of the Year, outlasted teammate Lilly Fowler-Conner by just 17 one-hundredths of a second in the closest 5,000-meter finish in Empire 8 Championship history in a meet record time of 16:49.73.
 
Brynn Mooney of SUNY Geneseo rolled to a win in the 400-meters, hitting the line first in 57.01 seconds. Jillian Ambler won the long jump with a meet record leap of 5.71 meters.
 
Nazareth’s distance medley relay team of Kelsey Fahy, Abigail Bowman, Ava Baker, Ella Impaglia earned a win by nearly four seconds in a time of 12:48.22.
 
Nazareth junior Isabel Morse led a 1-2 sweep for the Golden Flyers in the pole vault, clearing 3.77 meters along Kiara Tornusciolo.
Erin McGuinness of St. John Fisher won the shot put with a throw of 12.60 meters.
 
Action continues Saturday morning from Utica at 11 a.m., with nine finals events up for grabs.
