Empire 8 Student-Athletes off to Excellent Start at 2025 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships

Empire 8 student-athletes from six different institutions began their push towards All-American and national championship status at the 2025 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships qualifiers on Friday, March 14 from the Golisano Training Center hosted by E8 institution Nazareth University in Pittsford, NY. The SUNY Geneseo women's team is currently sixth in team competition after Friday's action.

SUNY Geneseo senior Penelope Greene earned runner-up honors in the 5,000-meter run. She led or was in the lead group for the first 2,600 meters before falling to fourth place. She used a vicious late kick to cut into the lead of eventual champion Faith Duncan of Wilmington College, hitting the finish line in a time of 16:39.36.

Senior Janelle Eckl of Geneseo finished fifth in the pentathlon with a career-best score of 3,657 points, just 17 points shy of the all-time Empire 8 record. She was the top finisher in the high jump, clearing 1.66 meters and put on a show in winning the final event, the 800-meter run by over five seconds in a time of 2:15.57.

Nazareth graduate student Lea Richard placed ninth in the shot put to earn her second All-American honor, a second team honor. She was one of 10 E8 student-athletes to garner second team All-American accolades on Friday.

Victoria Brewster of Houghton University advanced to finals of the 60-meter dash by finishing second in the prelims with an E8 record time of 7.49 seconds. Brynn Mooney of Geneseo placed second in the prelims of the 400-meters to also qualify for the championship race, while Geneseo's 4 x 400-meter relay team placed seventh in the prelims and will compete for a national title Saturday evening. All will earn first team All-American accolades after action on Saturday.

Alexa Belanger of Houghton will also compete in the high jump on Saturday.

On the men's side, Jonathan Zavala won his preliminary heat and was the fastest performer overall in the mile with a time of 4:10.50. Jacob Miller of Geneseo recorded the third best time in the prelims of the 400-meter dash, finishing in an Empire 8 record time of 47.87 seconds. Both will earn first team NCAA All-American accolades after the finals on Saturday.

Hunter of Logan of Utica University will compete for a national title in the shot put, while Manuel Sepulveda of St. John Fisher University is set to compete in the triple jump Saturday.

For each men’s individual event contested, including the heptathlon, the top 20 declared student-athletes were accepted into the championships.  For each women’s individual event contested, including the pentathlon, the top 20 declared student-athletes were accepted into the championships.  For each relay event contested, the top 12 declared relay teams, one per institution, were accepted into the championships.  

Student-athletes who finish 1st-8th in the finals are first team All-Americans, while finishers 9th-16th (9th-12th in relay events) are second team All-Americans.
