Empire 8 Well Represented as 2024-25 USBWA Rochester Area Men’s Basketball Selections are Announced

Jaylen Savage of Nazareth named Player of the Year; teammate Merritt Holly Named Rookie of the Year and Joe Clarke of Brockport earns Coach of the Year Honors

Ten Empire 8 student-athletes were selected to the 2024-25 United States Basketball Writers Association Rochester Area NCAA Division II-III Teams. The team was selected by The Rochester Chapter of the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. Jaylen Savage of Nazareth University was named the Player of the Year, while teammate Merritt Holly was named Rookie of the Year and Joe Clarke of SUNY Brockport was named the Coach of the Year.
 
Savage, and Luke Insley of Nazareth University, Mekhi Beckett and Zachary Rice of SUNY Brockport, Josh Garelle of SUNY Geneseo, Akinlana Popoola of Keuka College and the St. John Fisher University duo of Eric Kegler and Connor Williams were named to the USBWA Rochester Area First Team, while Holly and SUNY Geneseo's Robert Pericolosi were Honorable Mention selections.

Savage earned honors for the third straight season, while Beckett, Garelle and Insley were repeat selections. Savage was also named the 2024-25 Empire 8 Player of the Year, while earning D3hoops.com and NABC All-Region honors. He was also named the NABC Region III Player of the Year.
 
Student-athletes were selected from the nine Rochester area institutions which include: Keuka, Nazareth and St. John Fisher from the Empire 8, Roberts Wesleyan College, University of Rochester, RIT, SUNY Brockport, SUNY Geneseo and Hobart and William Smith College.
