SUNY Geneseo Wins 2024-25 Empire 8 Women's Indoor Track and Field Championship

Nationally-ranked SUNY Geneseo set eight Championship records over the two day event en route to scoring 265 points to win the 2025 Empire 8 Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championship, held the Todd and Jen Hutton Sports and Recreation Center on the campus of Utica University on Feb. 28-March 1.

The Knights scored 265 points, while two-time defending champion Nazareth University finished as the runner-up with 118 points. SUNY Brockport was third with 97 points, while St. John Fisher placed fourth with 90 points.

SUNY Geneseo junior Brynn Mooney was named the 2025 Empire 8 Indoor Track Athlete of the Meet. She broke a pair of Empire 8 Championship meet records, winning the 200-meter dash in a time of 24.97 seconds, which also broke her own league mark set earlier in the year and took the 400-meters in 57.01 seconds. Mooney was also second in the 60-meter dash, finishing with a time of 7.79 seconds in the finals after hitting the finish line in 7.73 seconds in the prelims.
 
SUNY Geneseo senior Janelle Eckl earned 2025 Empire 8 Championship Field Athlete of the Meet honors after winning the E8 pentathlon by 299 points, compiling a championship record 3,646 points, which is currently the third best performance in all of Division III this season. She was the top finisher in the 800-meters, high jump and long jump of the pentathlon. Eckl also was part of Geneseo’s E8 Championship record setting 4 x 400-meter relay team that crossed the finish line first in 3:56.71.
 
On Saturday, Houghton University sophomore Victoria Brewster broke her own E8 Championship and overall record in the 60-meter dash in a blazing fast time of 7.59 seconds, which is currently tied for eighth in Division III this season.
 
St. John Fisher senior Ciarra Franz broke the Empire 8 Championship record and tied her own league record in the 60-meter hurdles, winning the event with a time of 8.82 meters, which is tied for 17th in all of Division III.
 
Geneseo’s 4 x 400-meter relay team of Eckl, Nicole Gretzinger, Sierra Doody, Sophia Barclay set a meet record in winning the event by just under four seconds in an E8 Championship meet record time of 3:56.71.

Doody emerged victorious in the 800-meters by four seconds, crossing the finish line in an E8 Championship meet record time of 2:12.31. Teammate Penelope Greene edged out teammate Lilly Fowler-Conner by 38 one-hundredths of a second in an E8 Championship record time of 9:52.37. Geneseo had the top seven finishers in the event.

Nazareth senior Lea Richard won her Empire 8 record fifth consecutive championship in the weight throw with an impressive toss of 17.81 meters. Teammate Katie Jacques picked up the win in the triple jump with a leap of 11.40 meters.
 
First-year Alexa Belanger of Houghton took the high jump, clearing 1.63 meters.
