SUNY Geneseo Quartet of Mooney, Eckl, Popovici and Moore Sweep 2025 Niagara Region Women's Indoor Track & Field Honors

BIRMINGHAM, AL – SUNY Geneseo swept all four major awards from the Niagara Region as the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its Women's Indoor Track & FIeld Award winners. Brynn Mooney was named the Indoor Track Athlete of the Year, while teammate Janelle Eckl earned Field Athlete of the Year. Head Coach Chris Popovici was named 2025 Niagara Region Coach of the Year and Assistant Coach Dan Moore earned the region's Assistant Coach of the Year award .

Mooney, who hails from Honeoye Falls, New York, topped the 400-meter podium at the 2025 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships in 55.69. Adding to her resume, Mooney aided the Knights to a seventh place finish in the 4x400-meter relay. Mooney set Empire 8 records in a trio of events: the 200 meters in 24.97, 400 meters in 55.32, and 4x400m relay in 3:49.20. She was also named the Empire 8 Indoor Track Athlete of the Championship Meet on March 1 and earned E8 Indoor Track Athlete of the Year honors on March 25.

Ecki, who hails from Pittsford, New York, finished fifth in the pentathlon at the 2025 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships. She amassed a personal record of 3,657 points at nationals, two weeks after recording 3,646 points at the E8 Championships. Ecki topped the Niagara Region in the combined event and was top-three in both the high jump and long jump. She was also named the Empire 8 Indoor Field Athlete of the Championship Meet on March 1 and earned E8 Indoor Field Athlete of the Year honors on March 25.

Popovici, in his 11th year as Head Coach at SUNY Geneseo, led the Knights to a fifth-place team finish at the 2025 NCAA DIII Indoor Championships, earning 11 All-America honors led by 400-meter champion Brynn Mooney. SUNY Geneseo also won the team title at the Empire 8 Conference Indoor Championships, winning nine events, and the AARTFC Indoor Championships. He was also named the 2025 Empire 8 Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year.

Moore, who has led the Knights’ distance squad for ten years, coached three first-team All-Americans this season as SUNY Geneseo placed fifth at the NCAA DIII Indoor Championships. The distance group scored 115 points at the Empire 8 Championships. The Knights ranked in the national top-five #EventSquads at 800 meters, 3,000 meters, and 5,000 meters.
