GENESEO, NY - The SUNY Geneseo women's basketball team kept its season alive on Friday evening, knocking off No. 15 and host of the first round, Catholic University, 74-63. The Knights improve to 23-6 on the season with the win, and improve to 15-11 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. Geneseo will take on Montclair State tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Catholic.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The game opened with a near perfect start for the Knights, jumping ahead 11-0 in the first four and a half minutes of action. Kiley Snow knocked down a three to open the scoring, then ended the run with a jump shot, while Audrey Hintz, Eva Elliot, and Mackenzie Reigle also scored during the opening stretch.
- The Knights continued to play lock down defense in the opening frame, holding the Cardinals to just five points. Reigle capped off the impressive first quarter with a corner three at just over a minute left.
- Geneseo continued to hold the lead in double digits for the majority of the second quarter, extending the lead to as many as 14 points after a bucket from Hintz. However, Catholic managed to shift the momentum in their favor before halftime, cutting the lead to eight points.
- Catholic quickly cut the lead down to five points in the third, but layup from Hintz followed by a steal and quick three-pointer by Reigle off the inbound pass completely flipped the game in favor of Geneseo. The five point play in nine seconds put the Knights ahead by 14, and they never looked back.
- Geneseo never let Catholic back into the game after leading by 16 going to the fourth quarter, extending the advantage to as many as 22 points in the fourth. The Knights were able to run out the clock down the stretch and earn the 74-63 victory to advance to the second round.
