No. 5 Houghton University broke a close game open with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, en route to a 7-3 win over No. 6 seed SUNY Poly in the opening round of the 2025 Empire 8 Baseball Championship Tournament on Tuesday evening. Houghton improved to 22-19 overall, while Poly had its season come to an end with a 14-22 mark.

Houghton moves on and will take on No. 4 Utica University in the wildcard game of the 2025 Empire 8 Championship at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday morning from SUNY Brockport. The winner of that game advances to the double elimination portion of the E8 Tourney, the losing team is eliminated.

The Highlanders opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning before Poly came right back with two runs in the top of the second on a two-run double by Quinn Hill. Houghton would get the two runs right back in the bottom of the second inning on a run-scoring double from Mason Sutherland and single by Jeremiah Chow.

The pitching battle ensued as both teams matched zeroes until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Houghton broke open a close game with three runs to go up 6-2. Ty Kenney singled home a run and later in the inning with the bases loaded, Quinyang Fang singled home two more runs.

Houghton starter Ethan Cetton and relievers Nate Tyler and David Phillips did the rest to help Houghton secure the win. Cetton went seven strong innings, allowing just two hits and two runs, while striking out seven batters to earn the win.

Feng finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Kanta Ueno reached base fout times, with two hits and two walks, while scoring twice. Sutherland and Christian Tortoricu also had two hits.

Hill and Luke Landis had two hits apiece for the Wildcats, who left eight men on base.

Houghton won 2-of-3 gamea against wildcard opponent Utica earlier in the season.
