Alfred State Rolls to Decisive Win over Hilbert To Win First Game Of The Season

HAMBURG, NY- The Alfred State football team put on a dominant performance to get their first win of the season against Hilbert, 49-13. The Pioneers now sit at 1-1 on the season.

Justin Horvath led the Pioneers as he went 18-of-24 on the day for 250 yards and four touchdowns. Noah Currier led the rushing attack for the Pios as he rushed for 84 yards on 18 attempts for two touchdowns. Elijah Georges came away with two touchdowns on five receptions and 129 yards. On the defensive side of the ball, Evan Cervantes tallied 10 tackles, while Chris Bergman ended with nine tackles and an interception.

The Pioneers opened the game with a four-play touchdown drive that was capped off by a Horvath to Georges 43-yard touchdown reception. That gave ASC the early 7-0 lead. After getting a fourth down stop, Alfred marched down the field and extended their lead to 14-0. Currier capped that drive with a four yards touchdown carry.

To start the second quarter, The Hawks were able to cut into the deficit as they scored a touchdown to make it a 14-7 game. Later in the second, the Pioneers scored on another Horvath to Georges 43-yard touchdown reception to make it a 21-7 game. The Hawks scored a second touchdown as the first half expired, but Ceon Miles III blocked the extra-point attempt to keep it a 21-13 lead heading into the halftime break.

The Pioneers defensive held Hilbert scoreless in the second half, as the ASC offense continued to thrive scoring four more touchdowns to win the game 49-13. Currier opened the scoring in the second half with an eight-yard touchdown rush. On the next Pioneer possession, Horvath found Matthew Mancuso open in the endzone for the nine-yard touchdown reception. In the fourth quarter, Horvath found a wide-open Currier in the endzone for a four-yard touchdown and the 42-13 lead. The final touchdown came on the next possession as Diar Fleming found the endzone on a one yard rush up the middle for the 49-13 lead.

The Pioneers will look to carry this momentum into next week's game against Buffalo State on September 20 with a 6 pm kickoff. This game will be the Homecoming and the home opener.
