BROCKPORT, NY – The SUNY Brockport football team improved to 2-0 on Saturday with a 14-10 win against Hobart at home. Isaiah Simmons scored the game-winning touchdown for the Golden Eagles late in the fourth quarter with just 2:13 left to play.
Simmons broke 100-yards for his second straight game, totaling 156 rushing yards and two scores on 26 carries. Behind the big guys up front, Brockport's star back averaged 6.0 yards per carry against a solid effort from the Hobart defense. Ben Gocella threw for 111 yards (2 INT) on 8-for-14 passing and Anthony Vino went 7-for-12 with 51 yards passing. Brockport finished the day with 325 yards of total offense.
On the other side of the ball, the Golden Eagle defense held the Statesmen to just 44 yards on the ground (1.7 yards per carry) in the game. Linebacker Luca Friedman totaled 11 tackles from his spot in the middle (3 solo, 8 assisted). Alan Ramirez-Jimenez had a big game with six stop, including 2.5 tackles for loss. Friedman and Ramirez-Jimenez were joined by Kanye Davis with each player recording a sack. Kyle Slywka came up with a clutch interception and a key pass breakup in the fourth. Hobart was held to just 214 yards of total offense on the day.
In what proved to be a defensive battle most of the way, the visiting Statesmen got on the board first. Hobart took advantage of new life from a roughing the kicker penalty and marched down the field. Tru Styles found the endzone on a 2-yard, giving Hobart a 7-0 lead to close out the first quarter.
The Golden Eagles answered on offense in the second. Isaiah Simmons scored his first touchdown of the day from 16 yards out to tie the game up at 7-7 with 11:15 left until halftime. The scoring run capped off an 8-play, 79-yard drive for Brockport.
Hobart's next drive would break the tie, with Aidan Conrath and EJ Taylor leading the Statesmen down the field. However, this time the Brockport defense would hold up in the redzone, keeping them to just a field goal. Hobart would enter halftime with a 10-7 lead following the 29-yard make from Luke Monteyne.
The second half was quiet for both offenses, thanks to strong efforts from both defenses on the field. Brockport and Hobart combined for a total of nine punts in the second half, and one takeaway for each squad. The Golden Eagle defense also registered three sacks in the second half of the contest.
It wasn't until late in the fourth quarter when Brockport lit the scoreboard up one last time for the game. Ben Gocella connected with Nathan Williams for a 42-yard pass to set the offense up in Hobart territory with less than four minutes to play. Isaiah Simmons did the rest, following his blockers up front for the next three plays to find the endzone. Zach McGowan's extra point gave Brockport its 14-10 lead with 2:13 on the clock.
Putting one final nail in the coffin, the Golden Eagle defense came right out and got a stop. They forced three straight incompletions, taking the ball away after a fourth down stop to seal the win in front of the home crowd. The offense killed the remaining 1:43 on the clock, putting Brockport at 2-0 on the season thanks to a 14-10 final.
In week three, the Golden Eagles head back on the road to take on RPI. Kickoff in Troy, NY is set for 12 p.m. on Saturday, September 20
