2012-13 Women's Swimming & Diving Preview

Past Team Champions

Past Individual Champions

An event by event preview for the 2013 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships:

50 Freestyle: Stevens Louise Moores won the event in 2012 and has the top performance in the league at 23.45, ranking seventh in Division III. If Moores wins the event in 2013 she will become just the second E8 swimmer to win back-to-back titles, joining Ithaca Jen Heberton (2007, 2008).

100 Freestyle:  Stevens holds the top three times in the 100-freestyle entering the meet. Moores is ranked first, followed by Marissa Douglas and Jenn Rutledge.  Moores time of 51.12 is currently ranked fifth in Division III.

200 Freestyle: Stevens owns four of the top five spots on the Empire 8 perfromance list in the 200-freestyle. Marissa Douglas leads the quartet of Duck competitors. Hartwick’s Jade Woodend will challenge the Ducks for spot at the top of the podium.

500 Freestyle: A Ducks’ swimmer has won the event the last four years and looks primed to extend that streak as freshman Elizabeth Heinbach holds the top time in the conference with a 5:09.99, six seconds faster than Hartwick sophomore Gwen Mathias.

1650 Freestyle: Defending champion Gwen Mathias of Hartwick returns with the second fastest time (17:53.71) on the performance list.  Elizabeth Heinbach of Stevens ranks 17 seconds ahead of Mathias.

100 Backstroke: The 2011 and 2012 champion, Stevens junior Louise Moores, will be going for a three-peat. She ranks first in the event and fifth in Division III with a time of 55.56, while teammate Sharon Rooker holds the conference’s second top time of 57.88. Ithaca’s Kyle Bangs and Steven’s Megan Lisbon also hold sub one-minute times.

200 Backstroke: Lisbon will be looking for her third straight win in the event. She has posted the third fastest time in the league with a 2:08.23, ranking behind Bangs (2:06.84) and Rooker (2:07.68).

100 Breaststroke: Nazareth’s Carissa Risucci won this event in 2010 and 2012 and holds the second fastest time in the Empire 8 (1:04.77), only .06 seconds behind Stevens’ Brittany Geyer. Geyer is currently 13th in Division III and Risucci is ranked 14th.

200 Breaststroke: Brittany Geyer and Carissa Risucci may have a photo finish in the 200 breaststroke as their fastest times from the season are 2:18.77 (fourth in DIII) and 2:18.93 (fifth in DIII), respectively. Risucci won the league title in 2010 and 2011 but it was Geyer who won the NCAA title in 2012. Defending league champion Carly Jones is ranked fifth in the event.

100 Butterfly: The league features four swimmers who posted sub one-minute times during the season. The top time of 55.24 belongs to 2011 champion Louise Moores (currently fifth in DIII). Three seconds behind in the performance list is teammate Sharon Rooker (58.17), followed closely by Marissa Douglas (59.02) and Ithaca’s Carly Jones (59.94).

200 Butterfly: The top spots on the podium could feature a young crowd as the four fastest times on the season belong to two freshman and two sophomores. A Steven’s swimmer has won the event the last three years and Elizabeth Heinbach and Maria McClure may extend that streak. Challenging for the top spot will be Alfred’s Carly Watson and Ithaca’s Lyndsay Isaksen.

200 IM: Stevens has never won and individual title in the 200 IM event, but 2013 may be the year that all changes. The Ducks hold four of the top five times on the performance list, headlined by freshman Elizabeth Heinbach (2:09.56) and sophomore Brittany Geyer (2:09.86).

400 IM: Ithaca senior Carly Jones returns as the two-time defending champion with a third ranked seed time of 4:40.83. Steven’s Elizabeth Heinbach and Brittany Geyer rank ahead of her by ten full seconds and currently stand 22nd and 23rd in Division III.

200 Free Relay: Stevens has won the event the last four years and looks primed to extend its winning streak to five in 2013. The Ducks return three of the four swimmers from last seasons winning relay and hold the top time of 1:35.93. Ithaca is ranked second (1:41.06) and last won the event in 2008.

400 Free Relay: Stevens has dominated the 400-free relay the last four years and much like the 200-free relay, the Ducks are favored to win again with a top seed time of 3:29.40 (almost eight seconds head of Hartwick).

800 Free Relay: Stevens is the defending champion in the distance relay and owns the top time from the season of 7:45.92, nine seconds ahead of Hartwick’s time.

200 Medley Relay: The Steven’s Ducks could return all four swimmers from the winner relay a year ago, but they may change up the freestyle leg due to the depth on the team.  Nazareth and Ithaca should battle it out for second and third.

400 Medley Relay: Stevens will be looking to three-peat in this event. Ithaca is the only E8 school to have won this relay event four-straight years (2007-2010). Stevens has the favored lineup (3:53.61) and it should be a close race between Nazareth and Ithaca as they are separated by .2 tenths of a second on the performance list.

Diving: The diving events have been won by the Ithaca Bombers the past two seasons and 2013 could produce similar results. Korie Fackler won the 1-meter board in 2012 with a school-record score of 446.10 and placed third on the 3-meter board. She earned all-America honors at NCAA Championships as she placed 14th in the finals of the 3-meter event and was 15th on the 1-meter board. Hartwick’s Lindsay Bowker will be the top challenger for Fackler. Bowker is the top returner on the 3-meter board after a runner-up finish in 2012 with a score of 458. The Hawks last won a diving event in 2009.
