What Have You Done During the COVID-19 Pandemic to Stay Active and What Are Some Positive Effects of the Pandemic You Have Experienced?
During the COVID-19 Pandemic, I was able to lift everyday because of some gym equipment that was given to me by my neighbors. Additionally, I was able to run every week around my neighborhood if the weather was decent. I guess the two positive effects its has had on me was that I got to spend a lot more time with my family and that I was able to get a semester ahead by taking classes all summer for my graduate program.
What Role has Basketball Played in your Personal Development?
Sports, specifically basketball have been a part of my life ever since I was a kid. I have learned so much through basketball: teamwork, social skills, hard work, success, and failure. It has helped me make friends and build relationships that I won’t ever forget. Basketball helped make me into the man I am today through perseverance and competition.
At what age did you start playing basketball and what made you stay with it? Did you play any other sports growing up?
I started playing basketball when I was about five years old. I stayed with it mainly because a lot of my extended and immediate family played basketball. As time went on, I just wanted to constantly get better, so I took it a lot more seriously than a lot of my peers growing up. My parents gave me the opportunity to play a bunch of different sports such as soccer, baseball, and tennis from an early age but I was just naturally better at basketball. I played tennis in high school for two years before I focused just on basketball.
Any Superstitions When It Comes to Pregame Rituals/Training?
I never really had any superstitions but I do have a routine of going over to the scorer’s table before every home game and dapping everyone up, just to show my appreciation.
Why Did You Decide to Attend Utica?
I’m originally from New Jersey so I had never even heard of Utica. I also had interest from about 15-20 Division III schools as well as a handful of Division II schools. However, when I visited Utica, the combination of the layout of the campus and the hiring of a new head coach in Coach Coffey basically sold me to come play basketball at Utica.
How has Playing Collegiately and in the Empire 8 Prepared You For Life After College?
Playing college basketball has taught me so much about life, in heartbreak, disappointment, perseverance, reliability, and timeliness to name a few. Competing in the Empire 8 has made me a better person by challenging me to work hard even when I thought I was too tired to keep going. Being able to withstand the adversity and challenges that this Utica basketball program has experienced over the past five years has prepared me ten times over for life after college.

I’ve had a lot of great memories at Utica including making the playoffs for the first time in 10 years, playing in Empire 8 playoffs, and competing in a Championship game. UC men’s basketball has made history in the past four years and I’m so glad I could be a part of it.

Advice to Younger Student-Athletes on Why You Chose to Play a Collegiate Sport and Why Playing A Sport is So Important/Beneficial?
The best advice I can give to younger student-athletes on playing a collegiate sport is to push yourself. Work extremely hard because there is always someone out there working as hard or harder than you. Playing a sport, especially in college is so important and beneficial because it teaches you time management, teamwork, and selflessness: to put others before yourself for a greater goal.
