Four Empire 8 women’s basketball student-athletes earned 2019-20 D3hoops.com All-East Region honors. Senior Nicolette Conkin of Utica earned First Team honors, while fellow senior Rachel Benedict of Nazareth garnered Second Team accolades. Senior Megan Flynn of Sage and sophomore Ella Eckert of St. John Fisher were both named to the Third Team.
Conkin, who was named both the 2019-20 Empire 8 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, enjoyed an incredible final season for the Pioneers. She averaged 18.1 points per game and was fourth nationally, dishing out 6.8 assists per contest and 23rd in Division III, recording 3.2 steals per game. Conkin scored scored in double figures 21 times this season, added 11 games with at least eight assists and also has two different games with eight steals. She scored a career-best 37 points in the Empire 8 Semifinal on Feb. 28.
Benedict earned D3hoops.com All-East Region honors for the second straight season, Benedict, the 2019 Empire 8 Player of the Year, earned all-league first team honors for the third straight season after averaging 18.4 points and a league best 11.6 rebounds this season. Benedict, the 2017 Empire 8 Rookie of the Year, finished her four-year career with 1,624 career points.
Flynn earned 2019-20 All-Empire 8 First Team honors in 2019-20. She was one of three E8 student-athletes to average a double-double on the season with 13.6 points and 10.8 rebounds per game (third in the league). Flynn was also named to the 2019-20 Empire 8 Championship All-Tournament Team after scoring 28 points to go along with 17 rebounds in the semifinal win over Utica. A standout in the classroom, Flynn was also named a 2019-20 CoSIDA Women’s Basketball Academic All-America Second Team selection.
Eckert helped lead St. John Fisher to the 2019-20 Empire 8 Championship. A 2019-20 All-Empire 8 First Team selection, Eckert led the Cardinals in scoring, averaging 14.0 points per game. She also led the squad and was fifth in the league, pulling down 8.4 boards per contest. Eckert led a stout St. John Fisher defense that allowed just 57.5 points per game, fewest in the league.
