The St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team beat Meredith College, 21-4, at the Angels' Athletic Field on Saturday. The Cardinals, ranked 12th in the IWLCA Division III Coaches Poll, finished their spring trip with a 2-0 record to start the season. Meredith is still searching for its first win of the season.
Sydney DeGirolamo put up a whopping 10 points that set a new career-high for the sophomore with four goals and six assists. Mallory Eymer scored a game-high six goals that tied the senior's career-high. Logan Chase posted six points while tying a career-high four goals. Brittany Halpin also set a new career-high by netting four goals.
After over seven minutes of scoreless play to start the game, Halpin found the back of the net for the first time this season. Halpin then scored again two minutes later and then Eymer found DeGirolamo to make it 3-0 Cardinals.
Meredith got on the board to make it a two-goal game and Fisher responded with seven unanswered goals that included free position goals by Eymer, Chase and DeGirolamo. Chase was able to beat the clock before halftime to give the Cardinals a 12-2 advantage heading into the break.
Freshman Mackenzie Alexander tallied the opening goal of the second half with DeGirolamo earning the assist. The Cardinals ended up scoring the first five goals of the period to gain a 17-2 edge.
Alyssa Sabotka ended up passing one to Chase who buried a shot right before the end of the game to give Fisher 21 goals on the day, one more than it scored in the season opener on Thursday.
The Cardinals out-shot their opponent, 32-14, and had 18 draw controls compared to the Angels' six. Fisher also went 80 percent on its clear attempts.
DeGirolamo and Maria Hristodoulou each had two ground balls. Hristodoulou and Halpin led the Cardinals with two caused turnovers. Claudia Mocciaro made six saves over 54 minutes played in net to earn the win. Lilly Goodsell came in relief and gathered two saves.
Fisher now prepares for its home opener on Wednesday at 4 p.m. when it will face SUNY Cortland at Growney Stadium.
