ELMIRA, N.Y. – Head coach
Victoria Bothner reached a significant milestone on Sunday after notching her 100th career coaching win as the St. John Fisher College field hockey team won its third straight game and remained unbeaten in conference play after blanking the Elmira College Soaring Eagles, 4-0, on Sunday at the Murray Athletic Complex.
With the win, Fisher improved to 6-5 on the year and 4-0 in the league while the home team fell to 0-9 overall and 0-4 against Empire 8 opposition. Bothner, who is her eighth season at the helm has established Fisher as one of the top teams in the country year-in and year-out. Over eight seasons, Bothner, who owns a 100-38 career record, has mentored six All-America selections and has captured two Empire 8 Championships including the last in 2020.
After a scoreless first half of play, Fisher scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 31st minute when Bre Socker found the back of the cage on a penalty shot to make it 1-0.
Fisher struck again fewer than three minutes later when Alyssa Andres tapped it back to Socker who beat the Soaring Eagles' goalie on the left side to double the Cardinals' advantage to 2-0. From there, Audrey Grieb was in the right spot at the right time and smacked a rebound into the far corner of the goal to push the lead to three goals heading into the fourth period.
Already holding a large lead with under 15 minutes to play, Fisher tacked on another goal in the 55th minute when Socker found Abby Richardson in front of the Elmira goal to extend the visitors' cushion to four goals.
In all, Fisher outshot its host, 35-4, in the win with Gianna Palma leading the way with 13 shots in all. Socker finished with eight shots in the win while Andres and Sam Choate had three shots apiece.
In goal, Sophia Trozzi moved to 6-5 after earning her fourth shutout of the season. Over 60 minutes of play, she made three saves.
Fisher will go for its fourth straight win at 4 p.m. on Wednesday when it travels to Keuka Park to take on the Wolves in another Empire 8 contest.
