Why did you join SAAC? What was your goal when joining?
I joined SAAC so that I could make a difference in the athletic community at AU. It is important to me that all the sports teams support each other and have comradery.
What projects are you currently working on in your campus community?
Currently the women’s basketball team is using our platform to raise awareness for Alzheimer’s, first generation students, and student athlete mental health. Through SAAC we were also able to fundraise and donate $432 to Jasper Troupsburg school after they were affected by flooding in late August, we also will be using our funds that we have raised to donate to breast cancer in October.
What’s the biggest challenge you are facing with these projects? COVID restrictions, only virtual, fundraising, etc.?
Last year we were not able to do much in person other than our team leaf rake, but around the holidays, my team helped out locally when they went home, volunteering in soup kitchens, meal deliveries, donating clothes, sending packages to soldiers, and toys for tots. Last year and this year we had to get more creative with the things we do because of COVID, so that has restricted us with some other things we enjoyed doing like reading to the elementary school kids and playing bingo at Elderwood Senior Care Facility.
How do you stay connected with your college community under COVID guidelines?
Our basketball team uses social media to stay connected and up to date with everyone. An example of that was we did summer features, alumni spotlights, and our why AU series. Our basketball team is working to help spread positivity on campus. For October we are partnering with Residence Life to design bulletin boards in each residence hall with positive quotes, thoughts, and tips.
What is Your Proudest Community Service Achievement?
My proudest community service achievement is when we hold our team leaf rake because the community sees us reaching out and that leads to them supporting us at our home games and saying hi to us when they see us in town.
What Roles has Women's Basketball Played in your Personal Development?
The fast-paced nature of basketball has helped me grow as a person in regard to letting things slide in the moment (the next-play mentality) and it has challenged me become the best leader I can even when I am personally struggling.
Why Did You Decide to Attend Alfred?
I decided to attend Alfred because as soon as I met two of the players on the team, I knew I would fit in here and be welcomed with open arms.
How has Playing Collegiately and in the Empire 8 Prepared You For Life After College?
It has prepared me to be able to work in conjunction with other people to reach a collective goal.
Favorite Athletic Memory from Your Time in College: Kelley Andrews hitting a buzzer beater during her senior game last year because I know how much time and effort she has put into our program, and all the things she has struggled and overcame at her time in Alfred.

Advice to Younger Student-Athletes on Why You Chose to Play a Collegiate Sport and Why Playing A Sport and Getting Involved With SAAC is So Important/Beneficial?
Coming into college on a sports team has helped me because I came in with a community of people who wanted me to succeed and that gave me people to fall back on when faced with adversity. It has also given me more of a structure and the ability to time manage myself when I am playing. Regarding SAAC, it has been beneficial to me to be involved in it because it has given me a voice, allows me to hear what other teams/people are going through, and allows me extra opportunities to serve the community and watch my peers play the sport they love.
The Empire 8 Conference's “Empire 8 Gives Back” Series features a student-athlete from one of its member institutions who promotes community service and serves in a leadership role within his or her athletics teams or SAAC.
