Six Empire 8 teams competed at the Niagara Regional, and Russell Sage College competed at the Mideast Regional, as part of the 2021 NCAA Men's Cross Country Regional Championships on Saturday, Nov. 13. The Niagara Regional was held at the National Warplane Museum in Geneseo, NY, hosted by SUNY Geneseo, while the Mideast Regional was raced at Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford, CT, hosted by Connecticut College.
A total of 10 teams (one per regional) will automatically qualify for the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships on Nov. 20. There will be 22 at-large teams selected by a committee that will be announced on Nov. 14. In addition, a total of 70 individuals will automatically qualify for the national championship. The top-seven runners not from a qualifying team will be determined the top-seven qualifiers per region. Those qualifiers will also be confirmed and announced on Nov. 14.
St. John Fisher had the top team finish, placing fifth overall at the Niagara Regional with 177 points, while Nazareth was right behind in sixth with 184 points.
Five Empire 8 runners earned All-Region accolades by finishing in the to[p-35. St. John Fisher's Riley Corey finished fourth overall over the 6,000-meter course, finishing with a time of 23:08. It is the best finish ever by a St. John Fisher runner at regionals. She will qualify for the NCAA Division III Championship next week.
The Nazareth duo of Emily Weaver and Megan Morin finished 18th and 19th overall over the cold, wet and muddy conditions .Weaver crossed the finish line in a time of 24:01.7, while Morin finished in 24:04.5. Utica's Jade Deninig placed 23rd overall in a time of 24:10.9, while St. John Fisher's Morgan Gould finished 27th overall in 24:22.9. to earn All-Region accolades.
Nazareth's Lilianna Hanning, Alaska Dunstan and Peyton Tripp, St. John Fisher's Lauren DeMichele and Taylor Highers along with the Houghton duo of Amanda Burrichter and Rachel Domaracki all finished in the top-60,
Corey will represent St. John Fisher at nationals, while Weaver and Morin will await for Sunday's selections to see if they qualifiy.
