NEW YORK – Visiting Nazareth, thanks to some torrid long-distance shooting, erupted for 55 first-half points Sunday against John Jay and the Golden Flyers cruised a 77-52 women's basketball victory over the Bloodhounds in non-conference action.
In just the fifth meeting between the two teams and the first since 2011, Nazareth won for the second straight time to improve to 3-4 overall. John Jay is 4-4.
Nazareth made a season-high 14 three-point baskets from six different players and the Bloodhounds couldn't recover. Jadyn Abrams scored all her game-high 19 points in the first half as she became the 18th Nazareth player to amass 1,000 points in career scoring.
John Jay scored the game's first basket, then Nazareth scored the next 19 points to take control. The Golden Flyers went on to extend their lead to 29-6 through 10 minutes as Abrams knocked down three three-point shots for 13 points. Miyah Sizer and Sabrina Wolfe also hit three-pointers as Nazareth went 5-for-11 from long distance.
Nazareth's hot shooting extended into the second quarter as the lead continued to grow. Abrams, Miyah Sizer and Chelsea Woodsum each hit two more three-pointers and Laura Petrafesa nailed another in the closing seconds to give Nazareth an insurmountable 55-21 lead. Nazareth went 12-for-23 from three-point range in the first 20 minutes, plus 7-for-7 from the foul line.
Nazareth was never seriously challenged in the second half as Miyah Sizer drilled another three-pointer and freshman Madilann Johnson added another. Nazareth's lead was 71-34 after three quarters.
In addition to Abrams' 19 points, Miyah Sizer finished with 14 and Kim Davis added 10 points and nine rebounds. Caley Cornwell had nine points and three steals, Wolfe eight points and a game-high 14 rebounds and Woodsum finished with eight points.
Nazareth is on the road again Wednesday for a non-conference game at Fredonia at 6 p.m.
