St. John Fisher Wins First Ever Empire 8 Team Title, Earning Spring 2021 Women’s Cross Country Championship

St. John Fisher Sophomore Riley Corey wins individual title

HOUGHTON, NY – St. John Fisher College won its first women's cross country title in program history, as the Cardinals emerged victorious at the 2021 Empire 8 Spring Women’s Cross Country Championship at sun-soaked Houghton College's Field of Dreams Course on Friday, April 9. St. John Fisher sophomore Riley Corey also won the individual title, finishing 34 seconds ahead of the field over the 5,000-meter course in a time of 18:43.1
 
The Cardinals had four of the top five finishers and five of the first nine to easily win the team title with a score of 21 points, Nazareth College finished second with 51 points and Russell Sage College placed third with 86 points. Defending champion and host Houghton College placed fourth with 110 points.
 
Corey, who finished third as a freshman in 2019, went right out to the lead and steadily widened her edge with each 1,000 meters.  St. John Fisher Junior Morgan Gould was second in a time of 19:17.6, 15 seconds ahead of third place finisher Mackenzie Feeney, a first-year standout from Russell Sage College. St. John Fisher sophomores Lauren Demichele (19:34.4) and Laura Witt (19:37.0) placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Feeney was named E8 Rookie of the Meet
 
Nazareth junior Emily Weaver, Russell Sage freshman Emma Cronin, Nazareth freshman Lilliana Hanning, St. John Fisher sophomore Chelsea Lamphere and Houghton sophomore Amanda Burrichter rounded out the top-10. All 10 runners earn All-Empire 8 first team honors.
